Mickelson a Worthy Winner Of The Best Tournament In The World

Well we have a new Open champion in Phil Mickelson, and what a worthy winner he was too! Having hung around in the mix all week, he somehow managed to muster up a final round 66 to win by three shots and in his own words was ‘The round of my life’.

It was all looking very tight at the top of the leaderboard with about two hours of play left, Woods never really got the putter going, Westwood looked calm but just made too many mistakes to win a tournament of this magnitude, and Adam Scott made a move and then faded away.

There was a charge from Ian Pouter in the middle of his round which saw him get to one off the lead with others still out on the course, but he couldn’t sustain it and was clubhouse leader for a while at one over par.

But Mickelson made a late charge birdieing four out of the last six holes including a tremendous three on the last to comfortably seal victory to the delight of his waiting family and coach Butch Harmon.

Although I would have loved to see an Englishman win The Open, I think Mickelson has been a great ambassador for the game of golf, and he seems like a really great guy too, so good luck to him, and I think he’s got a few more in him yet!

Woods Ready To Win 15th Major

The biggest name in world golf Tiger Woods has said he is ready for The Open as preparations continue ahead of  Thursday’s opening round.

Woods has now been without a major for 5 years when he claimed the US Open title back in 2008, and it was two years before that he last claimed the Claret Jug at The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2006, where he fought off the challenges of Chris DiMarco and Ernie Els.

It’s been a fruitful year for Woods so far, but he has been unable to reproduce the form shown on the regular tour events in the major championships.

Maybe it’s pressure, maybe it’s not, but you can be sure he will give it 100% when he steps onto the first tee on Thursday on he will believe that he can win.

Once he gets this long awaited 15th major I think he will get another five or six, if he can just break this mental barrier that the majors seem to have over him at the moment.

Mickelson Returns To Action After US Open Heartbreak

It’s a return to action tonight for Phil Mickelson after one of the biggest disappointments of his career a few weeks back at the US Open where he came out second best to England’s Justin Rose in a thrilling final day at Merion.

Mickelson has now finished second 6 times in the event and is looking to put the heartbreak behind him this week at the Greenbrier Classic.

The American has got 4 major titles to his mane now and a total of 41 PGA Tour events and if it wasn’t for Tiger Woods he would have been World Number One for many years. But write him off at your peril, this guy has got a few more years in him yet, and he will be contending for many more majors over the next few years let me tell you.

It’s Thursday, Which Only Means One Thing – More Golf!

It’s Thursday, which normally means it’s the start of the golfing week on tour in Europe and America. The two tournaments happening this week are the Travelers Championship in the USA and the BMW International Open in Germany.

A lot of players who played in the US Open are playing in one of these two tournaments, accept Tiger Woods who was advised to pull out after injuring his elbow in Merion’s deep rough last week.

As I write this Ernie Els is leading the BMW with an impressive round of nine under par and Hunter Mahan is leading the Travelers Championship at six under par through twelve holes, but England’s Lee Westwood has also started well and is two under par through twelve.

Let’s hope we’re treated to another great week of golf and another exciting finish!

Come back tomorrow where I will be talking about The Open which isn’t far away now!

Donald Up To Sixth In The World

As we head into this weeks US Open which is to be held at Merion Golf Club, Luke Donald finds himself moving up to sixth place in the world rankings.

The top five remain unchanged as Brandt  Snedeker drops to seventh and the winner of the PGA Championship Matteo Mannassero moves up to 25th place.  Also moves upwards for Thomas Bjorn and Harris English.

I wonder who is going to do the business this week? Will it be a walk in the park for Tiger, will McIlroy find some form and tear the field apart like he did back in 2011 or will we see a new major winner come from the pack? Who knows?

I can’t wait to find out!

Tiger and Sergio Row Needs To Move On

Last week at Wentworth saw a lot of controversy when Sergio Garcia said some comments about Tiger Woods that were taken the wrong way ahead of the BMW PGA Championship.

When Garcia was asked if he would invite Tiger around for dinner he replied “He can come around every night for some fried chicken if he wants”

Although Garcia hasn’t apologised to Woods face-to -face yet Tiger is keen to move on now even though he is still upset about what was said.

Garcia obviously isn’t a racist, but when you’re under the spotlight you have to be careful about what you say as the press are very quick to jump on any error you make. He just said the first thing that came into his head. If he had said’ Hot dog and chips’ then the press would have still found a way to make it into a story.

For the good of the game this needs to be resolved so we can all MOVE ON!!!

Woods and Snedeker Looking To Put The Masters Behind Them

The Players Championship gets underway tomorrow at the world famous Sawgrass golf course in Florida. The players see this tournament as their fifth major as it has one of the best fields in golf and the prize money isn’t too bad either!

It’s a course that World No.1 Tiger Woods has struggled a bit in the past but he has managed a win here before and will be looking to keep his good run of form going and get that dreaded 15th hole at the Masters out of his system.

Brandt Snedeker who had a poor finish in the last round at Augusta last month will  hope his fantastic start to the year will continue and he can get over the disappointment of missing out on the green jacket after three superb rounds at the Masters, which saw a bad fourth day of putting let him down.

This is a bit of a horses for courses type of course and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a past winner or an older player claims the tile this time around.

Live on Sky Sports at 6pm tomorrow.

Is There Anything That Can Stop Tiger Now?

Tiger Woods is back to where he wants be and where I think he will stay for a very long time now.

After a turbulent couple of years he has put all of his woes behind him and shown everyone what a great champion he is and what great champion he will still be in the future.

Two years ago we all thought that we had seen the last of one of the greatest golfers that has ever lived, his personal life was in tatters, he had dropped to outside the top 50 in the world and he had to publicly apologise for his actions in front of millions of people, something that would have finished many men off. But this guy is made of something that  I think is nearly inhuman.

I don’t think there’s any doubt that he will break Jack Nicklaus’ record, he wants to be the best in world and he has such a strong mind and wants to be the best that I don’t think anyone can stop him now.

Tiger Having It All His Own Way Again

The Bay Hill Invitational final round is  back underway after severe rain and tornado warnings  stopped play yesterday. Like you, I was ready to settle down yesterday evening to hopefully watch Tiger romp to victory for the third time this season but unfortunately the weather won that battle.

As it currently stands Tiger is three shots clear of Keegan Bradley  (who is nine under par) going into the sixth hole and looks pretty comfortable at the moment. The wind is up a bit today and it’s hard to see many players shooting low scores in these conditions, and you feel that all Tiger will have to do is shoot a 72 to win here and take the No.1 spot from McIlroy.

Will McIlroy End Up Chasing Tiger’s Tail?

Rory McIlroy decided not to play at the Bay Hill Invitational this week for reasons he will only know. He didn’t play last year either as he wanted to prepare for the Masters and seems to do this before every major to get his golf game tuned.

I find it a little strange I have to admit,  if you were No.1 in the world wouldn’t you want to deny the guy in second place  the chance of overtaking you? Especially as that guy happens to be Tiger Woods who won’t give the spot up easily after losing it for a few years now.

Even Arnold Palmer was surprised that the Northern Irishman didn’t want to  play at Bay Hill in Florida this week and opted to play in next week’s Houston Open instead.

Well McIlroy could find himself behind Tiger in the World Rankings when he tees it up in Houston and in my opinion could be chasing Tiger’s tail for a very long time!

It’s a great week of golf ahead and an exciting time of year to be interested in golf. Let’s just hope it lives up to expectation!
