McIlroy Sets Sights On Two Majors This Year

Well last year was a mostly disappointing year for Rory McIlroy until he pipped Adam Scott on the final hole of the Australian Masters to end his 12 month barren spell. McIlroy has got the new year off to a bang as well after announcing he was getting engaged to Danish tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

Last year was a turbulent one for the former World Number One, it all went wrong at the start of 2013 when he signed the $250 million deal with Nike and had to get used to a brand new set of clubs which pretty much took the best part of 12 months. McIlroy feels like he is very close to being back to his absolute best and says he is looking to win two majors this year now he has the confidence with the clubs and with himself.

He definitely has the ability to achieve whatever he wants to in golf, but the only question would be in his temperament as we saw last year when he walked off the course claiming to have ‘pain in his wisdom teeth’. I for one hope that he does contend this year, it will really spice things up with Tiger virtually back to his best again and also Adam Scott will be up there you would think.

All is set for what I think could be one of the best years in golf for a long time!

Can McIlroy Salvage His Disastrous Season?

Well as I’m sure you know, we  have another big weekend of golf ahead. It’s the Bridgestone Invitational in America, at Firestone Country Club, a tournament that has been dominated by Tiger Woods over recent years.

It’s the last tournament before the final major of the year at Oak Hill, and it seems like only yesterday we were talking about the start of The Masters!

Rory McIlroy who won the US PGA last year will be hoping for a good week at Firestone so he can feel in good spirits when he goes to defend his title next week.

McIlroy says he feels in a positive frame of mind this week, and  feels even better than he did last year when he also had a bit of a slump before the same event.

It really is a big couple of weeks for McIlroy, he will want to get a top 10 finish in either of the next two tournaments and then carry that on until the end of the year. Once you get out of the habit of finishing in the top 10 every week, it can be very hard to get back into that habit, and he will be concerned however much he might come across as not being.

Monty Shoots 69 In First Champions Tour Event

Colin Montgomerie entered new territory this week when he played in his first Champions Tour event in Pittsburgh.

After turning 50 last week Monty played alongside good friend Bernhard Langer and made a solid start with an opening round of 69 which is one over par for the tournament, but finds himself four shots behind leader John Houston who opened up with a 65.

It was a day dominated by Americans who fill the 10 top spots but i’m sure the Europeans will fight back in great Ryder Cup fashion!

The Irish Open is taking nice shape where another Ryder Cup legend Jose Maria Olazabal is near the top of the leaderboard, one shot behind Robert Rock and Peter Uihlein.

Rory McIlroy will be hoping for a better day after his opening round of 74 yesterday, he finds himself eleven shots off the lead as it stands and is in danger of missing yet another cut this year.

Another great weekend of golf coming up. Enjoy!

All Star Line-Up At The Irish Open This Week

It’s the start of the Irish Open this week to which there will be an illustrious field of Ryder Cup players and Major Champions. The  €2million event has attracted the attention from around the world and they will be coming to the glorious Carton House Golf Club.

There will be no fewer than 79 European Tour Winners teeing it up this week and seven players with 11 major titles between them also trying to get into form before The Open championship in a few weeks time.

The 2012 Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazábal will also be teeing it up having won the event back in 1990, he will have four of that team who won in MedinahMolinari, McIlroy, McDowell and Paul Lawrie.

Should be a great week of golf again, let’s just hope the weather is okay, as we all know it can get a bit wet on the Emerald Isle!

Rose Win To Boost English Players Performance At Majors

It’s been a 43 year wait but finally England can be proud once again and finally be able to celebrate a US Open win by the great Justin Rose.

In a week that saw many different players top the leaderboard at some point we all knew that the winning score was going to be around the level par mark and that it would be a player who showed the most patience and accepted that sometimes a bogey was a good score on hole if they were going to win.

English players have been knocking on the door for some time now since Nick Faldo was the last Englishman to win a major at the 1996 Masters when he overcame a seven shot deficit to beat Greg Norman in the final round.

We’ve had Colin Montgomerie fall at the last hurdle on a couple of occasions, we’ve seen Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Lee Westwood come so close but not quite able to finish the job off, but hopefully now Rose has won a major it will inspire others to do so and make them believe that they can.

It wasn’t long ago when Padraig Harrington won his first major and a second shortly followed which then we saw the likes of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy do the same.

Lets just hope that this is start of something big for English golf.

My Betting Tips For The US Open

Just a couple of days now until the second major of the year gets underway at Merion Golf Club, the first time it’s been held there since 1981 when it was won by Australian David Graham.

So we don’t know a huge amount about the golf course or how players have performed there in the past, so when it comes to betting it’s very difficult to pick a winner here.

The last 5 years have seen different styles of winner:

2008 – Tiger Woods

2009 – Lucas Glover

2010 – Graeme McDowell

2011 – Rory McIlroy

2012 – Webb Simpson

2013 – ?

But there is someone who has a bit of form around this golf course, Rickie Fowler played exceptionally well when he played there in the Walker Cup in 2009. So my betting tips are as follows…

Rickie Fowler   67/1

Graeme McDowell   23/1

Rory McIlroy 23/1

Good luck if you have a bet, and enjoy watching the golf!

Donald Up To Sixth In The World

As we head into this weeks US Open which is to be held at Merion Golf Club, Luke Donald finds himself moving up to sixth place in the world rankings.

The top five remain unchanged as Brandt  Snedeker drops to seventh and the winner of the PGA Championship Matteo Mannassero moves up to 25th place.  Also moves upwards for Thomas Bjorn and Harris English.

I wonder who is going to do the business this week? Will it be a walk in the park for Tiger, will McIlroy find some form and tear the field apart like he did back in 2011 or will we see a new major winner come from the pack? Who knows?

I can’t wait to find out!

Laird Wins By Two Over In-Form McIlroy

A superb win for Scotland’s Martin Laird late last night in the Texas Open has ensured that he will be travelling to Augusta this week to compete in the Masters which starts on Thursday.

Laird started the day five shots behind leader Billy Horschel, but was soon to catch up with four birdies early on on in his round.

It was Northern Irishman and No.2 in the world Rory McIlroy who ended up being Lairds nearest rival. McIlroy will be going into the Masters feeling a lot better after a good competitive week of golf and being in the last couple of groups once again.

Well Thursday is all set to be a great day in the golfing calender as we see the start of one of my favourite tournaments in the world.

Will McIlroy End Up Chasing Tiger’s Tail?

Rory McIlroy decided not to play at the Bay Hill Invitational this week for reasons he will only know. He didn’t play last year either as he wanted to prepare for the Masters and seems to do this before every major to get his golf game tuned.

I find it a little strange I have to admit,  if you were No.1 in the world wouldn’t you want to deny the guy in second place  the chance of overtaking you? Especially as that guy happens to be Tiger Woods who won’t give the spot up easily after losing it for a few years now.

Even Arnold Palmer was surprised that the Northern Irishman didn’t want to  play at Bay Hill in Florida this week and opted to play in next week’s Houston Open instead.

Well McIlroy could find himself behind Tiger in the World Rankings when he tees it up in Houston and in my opinion could be chasing Tiger’s tail for a very long time!

It’s a great week of golf ahead and an exciting time of year to be interested in golf. Let’s just hope it lives up to expectation!

McIlroy Continues To Get Frustrated By Current Form

The story on everyone’s lips ( apart from the ongoing putter row ) is that of Rory McIlroy, and his sudden loss of form since the equipment change at the start of the season.

It certainly didn’t get any better at the Honda Classic for McIlroy after he withdrew from the tournament in his second round after finding himself seven over par through eight holes.

He said it was because of pain in his ‘wisdom teeth’ that caused him to walk off the golf course, but only he will know the real reason why. Was it just the frustration of  playing awful golf? Was it petulance? Or was it more ‘I’m not going to win this golf tournament so I might as well call it a day and stop the embarrassment”?

Eighteen time major winner Jack Nicklaus believes that McIlroy is frustrated with his current form but will come good for the first major of the year at Augusta.

The Northern Irishman has had it pretty easy since he turned professional, so it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few tournaments and whether he will get some more wisdom tooth pain if things don’t go his own way over the course of the next couple of months.
