The wild card picks for next years Ryder Cup will be announced a day later than scheduled Paul McGinley has decided.

The European captain was due to announce his selections on 2nd September after the Italian Open which is the final qualifying event had finished, but the Irishman has put this back 24hrs to avoid clashing with the Deutsche Bank Championship which will finish on the Monday.

The thought of doing this is to avoid what happened in 2010 when Paul Casey and Justin Rose were playing in Boston only to find out when they finished that they had been overlooked by Monty for Celtic Manor.

It’s unlikely to make any difference to the selection but is just a matter of respect for the players involved.

It’s been a 43 year wait but finally England can be proud once again and finally be able to celebrate a US Open win by the great Justin Rose.

In a week that saw many different players top the leaderboard at some point we all knew that the winning score was going to be around the level par mark and that it would be a player who showed the most patience and accepted that sometimes a bogey was a good score on hole if they were going to win.

English players have been knocking on the door for some time now since Nick Faldo was the last Englishman to win a major at the 1996 Masters when he overcame a seven shot deficit to beat Greg Norman in the final round.

We’ve had Colin Montgomerie fall at the last hurdle on a couple of occasions, we’ve seen Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Lee Westwood come so close but not quite able to finish the job off, but hopefully now Rose has won a major it will inspire others to do so and make them believe that they can.

It wasn’t long ago when Padraig Harrington won his first major and a second shortly followed which then we saw the likes of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy do the same.

Lets just hope that this is start of something big for English golf.

Casey Plays Wonderful Golf In Overdue Return To Form

A delighted Paul Casey was all smiles after his first round display at the Perth International as the former world no.3 continued to rediscover his form.

A superb round of 67 at Lake Karrinyup put the Englishman in a tie for fourth place, two behind leaders  Michael Hendry and Alejandro Cañizares who are on seven under par.

Casey who was in the top ten in the world only 18 months ago, was involved in a  snowboarding accident last winter which kept him out of the game. After a lot of rehabilitation Casey returned, but a lack of form saw him slide to 132nd.

There were signs that his game was on back on track last week when he finally collected ranking points for the first time since April with a third-place finish in Korea.

“I played wonderful golf today,” said Casey, who played some wonderful golf from tee to green today.

Casey Puts Things Into Perspective

It’s been quite a while coming but Paul Casey is looking forward to being reminded that he has got one of the best jobs in the world going at this week’s Omega European Masters at the the simply stunning Crans-sur-Sierre.

It’s been a tough year for Casey so far, injuries have kept him out for a while and his comeback hasn’t exactly set the world alight. It all started with a rare case of “turf toe” before a shoulder issue hampered his progress more recently.

Because of all the problems it’s meant Casey has been unable to rediscover the superb form that got him to a career high third place in the World Golf Rankings three years ago.

All of these worries will be at the back of the Englishmen’s mind as he gets ready to play at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre course in Crans Montana this week. It’s as spectacular as they get when it comes to golf.

The best hole on the course has to be the seventh hole, the players are greeted by a quite amazing view of the neighbouring Alps, which lives long in the memory.

“When you’re out at the seventh tee, the classic image you see, it’s stunning,” he said. “It’s a wonderful place to play golf, not just for the views but also for the people and how we’re treated here.

He will get back in the top 10 in the world next season, I think he is too much of a determined character not to. Plus he loves the Ryder Cup which is a big motivation for anybody.

My Tips For The USPGA Tournament

USPGA Odds | James Irons GolfThe USPGA Tournament takes place at the stunning Atlanta Athletic Club this week, with the practise rounds already underway and the tournament itself set to start on Thursday.

As usual for these big tournaments, I’ll have a few pounds riding on the result – here are my tips for the 2011 title:

David Toms is on great form – in 16 tournaments so far this season he has had five top ten finishes. At around 55/1 he is exceptional each-way value.

Jason Day – The Australian has had an brilliant eight top ten finishes in 16 tournaments so far this season and gave fellow countryman Adam Scott a run for his money last week. At 25/1 he’s worth a few pounds of anybody’s money.

Martin Laird – The Scotsman has over $2.5m in prize money so far this season and is no stranger to the loft heights of the leaderboard – he has a first place and a third place to his name this season so is worth a punt at around 90/1.

Luke Donald is still the world’s number one golfer and therefore can never be ruled out – his form over 13 tournaments this season has been outstanding – he has over $4m in prize money to his name and will be looking to add to that this weekend. 14/1 is a little tight but is a useful cover bet based on form.

Paul Casey has been making cuts but fading away from there. He’s a better golfer than his current form suggests so if you can get the 140/1 that’s currently being offered then it’s worth a look.

Kj Choi – The South Korean is in consistent form and looks good value to me at 70/1 – his experience also counts in his favour.
