Rose Win To Boost English Players Performance At Majors

It’s been a 43 year wait but finally England can be proud once again and finally be able to celebrate a US Open win by the great Justin Rose.

In a week that saw many different players top the leaderboard at some point we all knew that the winning score was going to be around the level par mark and that it would be a player who showed the most patience and accepted that sometimes a bogey was a good score on hole if they were going to win.

English players have been knocking on the door for some time now since Nick Faldo was the last Englishman to win a major at the 1996 Masters when he overcame a seven shot deficit to beat Greg Norman in the final round.

We’ve had Colin Montgomerie fall at the last hurdle on a couple of occasions, we’ve seen Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Lee Westwood come so close but not quite able to finish the job off, but hopefully now Rose has won a major it will inspire others to do so and make them believe that they can.

It wasn’t long ago when Padraig Harrington won his first major and a second shortly followed which then we saw the likes of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy do the same.

Lets just hope that this is start of something big for English golf.

Harrington Has To Be Part Of Ryder Cup Team

European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal has said publicly that Republic Of Ireland star and three-time major winner Padraig Harrington will have to produce an amazing performance at Kiawah Island this week if he is to keep his Ryder Cup spot, unless he wins of course which will take him into the automatic qualifying positions.

The Irishman currently lies 19th in the European qualifying list.

“He will have to do extraordinarily well here,” Olazabal said.

Harrington, with two British Open titles to his name has slipped to 63 in the world and needed a wildcard pick to be a part of the  winning team at Celtic Manor back in 2010.

He would certainly be one of my picks, he’s gutsy, he’s been there and done it before under pressure and has won 3 major titles, and he’s in pretty good form. There isn’t anybody else in the waiting list with those credentials. Has to be a dead cert to picked if he doesn’t qualify Jose.

Harrington Wins Shot Of The Month

Padraig Harrington has won Shot Of The Month with his superb chip during the Irish Open at Royal Portrush which was voted by fans from My European Tour.

Personally I thought there were a couple of crackers in the British Open, but hey what do I know?

The perfect pitch  from Harrington came on the 8th hole of the Dunluce Links, receiving  rapturous applause from the huge sell-out Northern Irish crowd who were hosting the event for the first in 60 year

The shot came from the right hand side of the fairway where he had found deep rough around 40 yards from the green, but the Irishman managed to conjure up a quite brilliant chip that landed on the front edge of the green before rolling into the centre of the cup for a birdie three.

What would your Shot Of The Month Been?

Harrington With New Golf Coach Pete Cowen

British coach Pete Cowen believes he can help his latest pupil Padraig Harrington put his recent woes behind him and return to the top of the game.

Three-time major winner Harrington has plummeted down the world rankings to 78th, from a high of third in 2008.

He turned to Cowen in August, hoping the Englishman could help him improve his swing and once-potent short game.

“With time, he’s now capable of getting back to being the best short-game player in the world,” said Cowen.

In July, Harrington parted company with his coach of 13 years, Bob Torrance – father of former Ryder Cup captain Sam – after hitting a new low by missing the cut at the Open and Irish Open.

PADRAIG HARRINGTON SELECTED 2011 RESULTS

  • Masters: 75th (missed cut)
  • US Open: 45th
  • Scottish Open: 14th
  • The Open: 72nd (missed cut)
  • Irish Open: 107th (missed cut)
  • Bridgestone Invitational: 59th
  • US PGA Championship: 64th
  • Dunhill Links Championship: 8th

This followed an alarming slump in form since winning the last of his majors, the 2008 US PGA Championship, which resulted in the Dubliner seeking out the advice of Cowen, whose many pupils include world number two Lee Westwood.

Harrington has already shown signs of improvement with an eighth-place finish at the Dunhill Links Championship two weeks ago, which he will be hoping to follow up with a strong showing at this week’s Portugal Masters.

Padraig came and asked me at the Bridgestone [tournament] if I would give an opinion on his swing and what I thought might improve it,” said Cowen.

“He thought he was spending far too much time on his long game, to the detriment of his short game. Padraig won two majors in 2008 with the best short game in the world. He felt as though he’d neglected that and when you looked at the stats it proved it. He’d become almost non-competitive.

2012 Ryder Cup Race Set To Begin

Ryder Cup Qualifying Starts On Thursday

The battle for 2012 Ryder Cup places is set to unfold as the first event in the race for qualification draws closer.

The European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre starts tomorrow with six players from the victorious 2010 team in the field.

“I’m excited the qualification period is starting. It will be interesting to see how the players perform,” said Europe’s 2012 Captain, Jose Maria Olazabel.

Ten players will qualify automatically, with Olazabal choosing two wildcards.

Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Miguel Angel Jimenez and brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari begin their campaigns in the Swiss Alps.

Five players automatically qualify through the European Tour‘s points list, with another five decided by the world rankings.

Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington will all be looking for solid performances in the latest round of the FedEx Cup play-offs, which take place in Boston on Friday.

“It is going to be very difficult to make the team – to be one of the top five on the European points list or the world points list is going to be tough,” added Olazabal.

“The players will have to play really well to make it and I am sure they are preparing themselves to peak at the right times so that we can have the best chance to win.”

The 2012 Ryder Cup takes place at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois in September 2012.
