It’s the start of the Irish Open this week to which there will be an illustrious field of Ryder Cup players and Major Champions. The  €2million event has attracted the attention from around the world and they will be coming to the glorious Carton House Golf Club.

There will be no fewer than 79 European Tour Winners teeing it up this week and seven players with 11 major titles between them also trying to get into form before The Open championship in a few weeks time.

The 2012 Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazábal will also be teeing it up having won the event back in 1990, he will have four of that team who won in Medinah – Molinari, McIlroy, McDowell and Paul Lawrie. 

Should be a great week of golf again, let’s just hope the weather is okay, as we all know it can get a bit wet on the Emerald Isle!

Royal Portrush is is one of the most striking golf courses you will ever see. With its natural beauty and rugged landscape it really is a site to behold with its towering sand dunes.

Founded in 1888 the course itself has gone through many changes. It used to be a 9 hole course when it first opened but only a year later was transformed into an 18 hole course. It was redesigned in by Harry S Colt before the Second World War and was said to Colt’s finest achievement.

It used to be named the Royal County Club when the Duke of York was patron, but after the Prince of Wales came along in 1985 the name changed to Royal Portrush.

It is the only Golf Club outside of mainline Britain to the host the Open Championship, which was held in 1951 and was won by England’s Max Faulkner.

Harrington Has To Be Part Of Ryder Cup Team

European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal has said publicly that Republic Of Ireland star and three-time major winner Padraig Harrington will have to produce an amazing performance at Kiawah Island this week if he is to keep his Ryder Cup spot, unless he wins of course which will take him into the automatic qualifying positions.

The Irishman currently lies 19th in the European qualifying list.

“He will have to do extraordinarily well here,” Olazabal said.

Harrington, with two British Open titles to his name has slipped to 63 in the world and needed a wildcard pick to be a part of the  winning team at Celtic Manor back in 2010.

He would certainly be one of my picks, he’s gutsy, he’s been there and done it before under pressure and has won 3 major titles, and he’s in pretty good form. There isn’t anybody else in the waiting list with those credentials. Has to be a dead cert to picked if he doesn’t qualify Jose.

Irish Open Back In Portrush After Sixty Five Years

The 2012 Irish Open takes a trip north of the border for this week’s event at one of the most famous courses in the world, Royal Portrush, which is situated eight miles north of Coleraine.

The well known golf course is located on the County Antrim coast, and last staged the tournament back in 1947, four years before it hosted The Open Championship.

In the 1990s it was also used to host the British Senior Open – on five occasions – and over the years has been a stopping off point for Americans players wishing to hone their links golf skills before continuing continuing on to compete in The Open.

And this week’s tournament also offers the players the opportunity to begin their preparations for The 2012 Open Championship which takes place at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in mid-July.

Irish Open To Hit Record Sales

Today the European Tour announced that it’s taking the unprecedented step of telling all fans who are planning to attend the Irish Open to buy their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment of missing out on the action at Royal Portrush Golf Club in June.

At the Northern Ireland Tourist Board headquarters in Belfast, the European Tour, as event organisers, also told about detailed Traffic and Transportation plans including adding a Translink coach, rail and Park & Ride services. These are designed to ensure that spectators have ease of access to the event, and to minimise the disruption to the neighbouring community on the roads surrounding Portrush.

Pre-tournament ticket sales for the event, being staged in Northern Ireland for the first time in nearly 60 years, have exceeded all expectations.

The first day of the tournament is on the 28th June,

Dyson ready for Irish title defence

It’s been 15 years since somebody successfully defend the Irish Open, but Simon Dyson will try and do so and take the trophy at the €2million event which takes place at Royal Portrush Golf Club from June 28-July 1.

Dyson shot 2 rounds of 67 over the weekend at last year’s Irish Open which earned him his sixth European Tour title, and the Yorkshireman is now trying to follow in the footsteps of Colin Montgomerie, who won the title in 1996 and 1997.

With only dropping 3 shots at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club last year in a fantastic display which he labelled his “best of the year”, Dyson is hopeful those memories will act as the catalyst for a successful title defence  at Royal Portrush who are holding the Irish Open for the first time since 1947.

Dyson Wins Irish Open

Simon Dyson yesterday won the Irish Open beating Richard Green by one shot.

Green had a long putt to win the championship on the 18th but bogied the hole which gave the tournament (his fifth European Tour victory) to Dyson on 15 under.

Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher holed a huge putt for birdie on the last which gave him a respectable third place finish.

David Howell, joint leader going into the final day with Dyson and Green, disappointed with a 73 on the Killarney course.

Peter Lawrie was Ireland’s best-placed golfer on nine under while Irish amateur Paul Cutler will be pleased with his week’s work, finishing on five under.

Dyson had just three bogeys all week and his win earns him a place in this week’s Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

Darren Clarke has told those who criticised his celebrations after his Open Championship victory to “get a life”.

In his own words, Clarke had “quite a few drinks” after his win at Sandwich, however this has led to criticism from certain parties.

“There’s been a little bit of chat about ‘he shouldn’t have had a drink, he shouldn’t have done this, he shouldn’t have done that’. People are concerned about whether or not I had one pint too many. I mean, get a life – it’s sport” said Clarke on Wednesday.

Hopefully Darren has fully recovered as he joins fellow Northern-Irishman and US Open champion Rory McIlroy at the Irish Open, which kicked-off this morning.
