Who’s Going To Win The Race?

With the DP World Tour Championship looming Justin Rose hopes he is strong enough to become European number 1 for the second time in his career.

He is 214,000 euros behind leader Henrik Stenson but has to finish in the top 5 to have any chance of overtaking the Swede who has been on top form this year.

Graeme McDowell also has a chance of winning the Race To Dubai if he can muster up a victory regardless of where Stenson finishes. You really get the feeling McDowell will be in the mix come Sunday afternoon, he’s just that type of player.

But is Rose is determined to finish the season off on another high to go with his historic major win at Merion back in June.

Rose last won the Order of Merit back in 2007 and feels like it’s his time to shine again.

There’s a lot of money at stake here for a lot of players, which can sometimes bring out the best in them, let’s hope for a terrific week of golf and an exciting finish!

Woods Backs Mickelson’s Decision To Cut Back On Events In 2014

Tiger Woods has supported Phil Mickelson’s decision to play a reduced schedule in 2014 after the big American’s announcement last week.

Mickelson hinted that he might even skip the end of season FedEx Cup play-offs despite the amount of money on offer in these tournaments.

The world number one Woods said he understood Mickelson’s decision to have more time away from the course, and saying that it is so important to stay refreshed for the big events such as the four majors and the World Golf Championships and of course The Players Championship.

Steve Stricker seems to have got it right this year, he has only played in 13 tournaments but has made the cut in each event  and has earned $4.4m. Not bad work if you can get it!

Shiv Kapur Earns European Tour Card For Next Season

Shiv Kapur has earned the right to play in next season’s European Tour after winning the Challenge Tour Grand Final.

He held his nerve on the final day to win the event by four shots to claim one of the fifteen Tour cards available. He shot a closing round of 70 to claim the top prize of 56,650 euros.

The win jumped him up 17 places from 20th to 3rd. It was a very steady final round performance which saw him card 16 pars and 2 birdies following rounds of 69-66 and a 67.

Scotland’s Jamie McLeary who got tied for second also made a big move by going up 18 places from 33rd to 15th which saw him claim the final card on offer.

Ryder Cup Wild Cards To Be Announced A Day Later Than Scheduled

The wild card picks for next years Ryder Cup will be announced a day later than scheduled Paul McGinley has decided.

The European captain was due to announce his selections on 2nd September after the Italian Open which is the final qualifying event had finished, but the Irishman has put this back 24hrs to avoid clashing with the Deutsche Bank Championship which will finish on the Monday.

The thought of doing this is to avoid what happened in 2010 when Paul Casey and Justin Rose were playing in Boston only to find out when they finished that they had been overlooked by Monty for Celtic Manor.

It’s unlikely to make any difference to the selection but is just a matter of respect for the players involved.

JJ Henry Shoots Course Record To Lead In Las Vegas

JJ Henry is all smiles at the moment as he took charge of the Shriners Hospital for Children Open after carding a magnificent round of 60 in Las Vegas.

He began his round on the back nine and only managed one birdie in his first five opening holes, although he managed to get to the turn at four under par before an absolutely blistering performance on the front nine.

The big American managed five birdies and an eagle on the last on the way home to carding an 11-under par score for the day.

It was a day of very low scores with Andres Romero carding a 61, James Driscoll, Jeff Overton and Jonathan Byrd carding 63’s, and Webb Simpson carding a 64.

It’s all set up for a thrilling second day, but something tells me the scoring isn’t going to be quite as good!

Rumford Returning Home After Busy Schedule

Brett Rumford is one of the most travelled golfers around this year and is happy to be back in his home country for the ISPS HANDA Perth International.

Rumford has had back-to-back victories on the European Tour earlier this year winning in Korea and China. He will playing in his 21st event of the season having taken advantage  of the tour’s International schedule.

He’s been flying all over the planet recently which makes coming back to his home country even more special as he looks to claim his third win of the season against a field which includes Paul Casey and Dustin Johnson.

As well as clocking up thousands of air miles he’s also clocked up thousands of pounds and will be one to watch this week.

Lewis Inspired By Rose

Tom Lewis’ self doubt has been helped by what he has seen Justin Rose do over the last 6 months.

Lewis found himself in the limelight back in 2011 when he shot an opening round of 65 in the British Open giving him a share of the lead. He ended up finishing 30th and won the silver medal as leading amateur.

Since then he has lost form and found himself 117th on the Race to Dubai in 2012 and was 155th a few weeks ago. But a strong finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links has moved him up the ranks and he can now focus on trying to win for a second time at the Oceanico Victoria Golf Course and get himself into the top 110 to keep his card next year.

He is a strong talent and will no doubt make his card for next year.

Europe End 13 Year Wait As They Beat GB&I In France

Europe regained the Seve Trophy for the first time since 2000 as the singles went down to the final match in France.

The side captained by José María Olazábal’s side have lost the last six contests to Great Britain & Ireland, and after leading for the first two days found themselves tied going into the final days singles after Sam Torrance’s team made a great fightback in the foursomes.

It was all very reminiscent of the Ryder Cup in Medinah last year as Francesco Molinari played the anchor role and took victory by beating Chris Wood 3&2.

This event has started to gain some momentum now in the last few years, it would do so even faster if the top players would stop being so precious about their schedules, maybe they will see sense next year.

Luiten Claims Victory In Home Country

Congratulations to Joost Luiten who became the first Dutchman since Maarten Lafeber to win his national open.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Luiten who had to battle hard against in-form Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez. It was pretty much a two horse race in the final round at the Kennemer Golf Club, and both players had to contend with a strong swirling wind too.

It was literally a battle to the end which saw both players dropping shots and both having to hole short putts on the 18th which saw them tied and forced into a play-off against each other.

Jimenez left himself a five footer for par which lipped out and left Luiten a simple two putt to claim victory in his home country.
