Lewis Inspired By Rose

Tom Lewis’ self doubt has been helped by what he has seen Justin Rose do over the last 6 months.

Lewis found himself in the limelight back in 2011 when he shot an opening round of 65 in the British Open giving him a share of the lead. He ended up finishing 30th and won the silver medal as leading amateur.

Since then he has lost form and found himself 117th on the Race to Dubai in 2012 and was 155th a few weeks ago. But a strong finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links has moved him up the ranks and he can now focus on trying to win for a second time at the Oceanico Victoria Golf Course and get himself into the top 110 to keep his card next year.

He is a strong talent and will no doubt make his card for next year.

Poulter Defeats Senden But Faces Tough Next Match

Ian Poulter began the defence of his title in style at the Volvo World Match Play Championship with a victory over Australian John Senden.

Poulter who won his first match 3&2 faces a tough test against Portugal Masters champion Tom Lewis in his second and final group game tomorrow.

Poulter who has also won the WGC-Accenture Match Play, went three ahead with a ten foot putt at the ninth and five footer on the short 12th.

The Englishman admitted that the half he got on the fourth  hole was a turning point in the contest.

“I said John was going to be a very steady opponent, and he was on front nine,” he said.

Can Poulter defeat Tom Lewis tomorrow? I think it will be a really tough test as young Tom Lewis is fearless and has a very old head on a young pair of shoulders. Should be an interesting contest!

Golf Has A New Rising Star

Englishman Tom Lewis birdied five of the last seven holes to win his maiden title at the Portugal Masters, in only his third professional start in golf.

The 20-year-old, who shot to fame by leading The Open as an amateur in July, beat a field that included Padraig Harrington and Martin Kaymer.

Lewis, who entered the closing stretch only in seventh spot, shot a closing 65 to finish with a 21-under-par 267.

“If you said that I’d finish 21 under, I’d have said ‘no way’,” he said.

“I’m a long way behind Rory in the Order of Merit so I’ve got a long way to go. But I’m really pleased.

“To shoot 65 in the last round, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be able to do that.”

Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello was the nearest challenger, finishing two shots adrift.

Tiger Woods needed five tournaments to land his first professional title, while McIlroy did not taste success until his 38th European Tour event.

Lewis two-putted the long 12th and then had four more birdies in a row from the 14th. He kept his nerve to par the dangerous final hole and had to wait the best part of an hour before victory was confirmed.

Instead of facing a trip to the Tour school in December – he entered the week 234th on the Tour money list and 621st in the world – he is now exempt for two seasons because of his win.

Open Championship Day One Review

Tom Lewis, an amateur who had to come through qualifying, is the surprise leader of the British Open Championship after day one, sharing the lead with Danish veteran Thomas Bjorn after the first round.

Bjorn, who went out earlier in the day, shot a five-under 65 and was joined later on by the 20-year-old Lewis.

The pair lead by one from Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover and American debutant Webb Simpson.

Northern Ireland’s 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell and countryman Darren Clarke (playing in his 20th Open!), England’s Simon Dyson (one of my Outside Bets) and Germany’s world number three Martin Kaymer were in a large group on two under.

World number one Luke Donald had a bad day with the putter, shooting 71, (+1), as did Lee Westwood and US Open champion Rory McIlroy, who got off to a shaky start, dropping two shots in his first three holes, fighting back to play the last 15 in one under.

The other star of the day was Dustin Johnson who shot a hole-in-one on the 16th during a roller-coaster round.
