Phil Mickelson shot an impressive eight-under-par 64 and came from six shots behind to win the Pebble Beach Pro-Am by three shots on 16 under par.

Mickelson hit three birdies and an eagle in his first six holes to wipe out the overnight lead of Charlie Wi who got off to the worst possible start by four putting the first hole and found himself playing catch up early on.

Wi closed with three birdies to finish with a 72 to end second on 15 under. Just a shame Sky Sports didn’t want to show Wi finish the the 18th hole, especially as if he had holed his second shot he would have tied the lead!!

Tiger Woods bogeyed the final three holes on the front nine on his way to a 75 as he dropped back to eight under. Tiger never really got going, he missed four or five really short putts which is unlike Tiger. He seems to be starting tournaments well but can’t seem to finish them off like he used to.

“It just feels great to win this tournament,” Mickelson, 41, said.

“It’s a special place for me, Pebble Beach, and to have a win here, where my grandfather caddied, feels awesome.

Golf Courses Suffering In America

Phil Mickelson is the beneficiary of an over-populated golf course market in Arizona.

The golf star and his agent recently purchased Sanctuary golf Course in Scottsdale for a cool $2.2 million. Not a bad price considering five years ago that course was probably valued near $20 million.

Golf clubs all over Arizona, from Superstition Mountain in Gold Canyon to Seven Canyons in Sedona, have been hurt. But the economic fallout is especially noticeable in Scottsdale, the pinnacle of the Valley’s sprawling golf landscape of close to 200 courses.

There are far too many golf courses for the metropolitan Phoenix market, an InsightLand and Investments partner who has sold golf courses for 25 years. Mississippi has just over 200 golf courses in the entire state. In metropolitan Phoenixalone, there are 200 courses. Granted, there are more people in Phoenix than in the entire Magnolia state, but you wonder how they ever thought they would be able to support all 200 plus golf courses.

Great Golf Courses | Number 3 | Augusta National

Augusta has to be one of my favourite courses of all time, it hosts the second biggest Major of the year ‘The Masters’. Every year when it comes around you can feel the excitement growing around all golf fans as it’s the sign that spring is here and the golf season is a about to get underway again!

Augusta is the most picturesque golf course in the world with its amazing array of flowers and shrubs. Augusta is known best for it’s fast and sloping greens which can make the best players in the world look foolish at times, and it’s usually the person that handles the greens the best that goes on to win.

The course has had to be extended over the years to cope with the advances of technology as it was playing a little bit to easy at one stage, but its back to its toughest again now stretching over 7,400 yards.  The course has 10 par 4’s, 4 par 3’s and 4 par 5’s.

Past Winners include:  Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods,and  Phil Mickleson.

Nick Price and Greg Norman share the course record which stands at 63.

The mystery of how Bobby Jones and course designer Alister MacKenzie  first met — and how Jones arrived at picking MacKenzie to design Augusta National Golf Club — has never been fully explained.

The golfer and architect created their masterpiece in the early 1930s, and it is the center of attention each spring as the home of the Masters Tournament.

Mickelson Switches To Belly Putter

Spectators at the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship this afternoon will get a chance to see a unique sight: Phil Mickelson using a belly putter.

Mickelson will be using the Odyssey belly putter for the first time in competition. It was made to the exact specification of the putter used by Keegan Bradley in his recent victory at the US PGA Championship.

Mickelson has been getting tips from the considerably less experienced Bradley on how to handle the putter, including ball position, eye position and grip. The two have played many pretournament practice rounds, cementing a friendship initially forged at the US PGA.

Rookie Bradley Wins US PGA

Keegan Bradley, ranked 108th in the world, beat Jason Dufner in a three-hole play-off to win his first ever major at the US PGA.

The 25-year-old American triumphed by one shot over his fellow countryman over the extra holes after they had both finished level at eight under in Atlanta.

Incredibly, Bradley had triple-bogeyed the 15th, giving Dufner a five-shot lead with just three holes to play,  but fought back as his rival seemingly suffered an attack of nerves.

Top two in the world, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood both halved their six-shot deficits on Sunday but fell away towards the end to both finish on three under.

Bradley went into the final day one shot behind  Dufner and after a shaky start, an eagle on the 12th hole saw him join his compatriot at the top of the leaderboard on nine under.

However he then chipped through the green into the water on the 15th, before back-to-back birdies on the next two holes.

34-year-old Dufner also found water on the 15th, this time from the tee, and this  sparked a spectacular downfall, as his bogey on the same hole, plus two more on the 16th and 17th saw him drop back alongside Bradley.

In the play-off, Bradley birdied the first hole, the 16th, to Dufner’s par and then made par on the short 17th as Dufner once again bogied. Dufner birdied the 18th but Bradley’s par was enough to hand him the Wanamaker Trophy and become the first American to clinch a major title since Phil Mickelson won the Masters in 2010.

My Tips For The Masters

So with The Masters starting tomorrow, a lot of golf fans will be getting ready to place their bets, and use their golfing knowledge to try and take a few quid off the bookies over the weekend!

I have placed bets on this famous tournament for the last few years (with varying results!) and these are my tips for this year.

I’ve gone for Phil Mickelson as my tip to win. He has had three top ten finishes out of eight events so far this season  and has won the tournament on three previous occasions, including last year when his winning score of -16 was one of the best Masters scores ever recorded. He will also be looking to equal the records of Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods, who have each won the tournament on four occasions. He is the favourite at 6/1, displacing Tiger,  who has been favourite every year for as long as I can remember!

I also like the look of the American, Matt Kuchar. He is having a solid enough season and is great value at 33/1.

I have also backed the following players each way – Luke Donald (25/1), Hunter Mahan (28/1), Ricky Fowler (66/1), Brandt Snedeker (125/1), and Bo Van Pelt (175/1) so if a couple of those players can finish in the top five places I’ll be very happy…

Defending Masters champion Phil Mickelson sent a warning of intent ahead of next week’s Major with a three-shot victory at the Houston Open.

The left-hander carded a final-round, seven-under 65 to finish on -20, with US compatriot Scott Verplank and rookie Chris Kirk in joint second.

Joint overnight leader Mickelson put aside two early bogeys with five birdies on the back nine.

The victory moves Mickelson to third in the world rankings above Tiger Woods.
