Woods Hires New Caddie

Tiger Woods has hired Joe LaCava as his new caddie as a replacement for New Zealander Steve Williams.

LaCava was the long-term bagman for Fred Couples, but the pair split in the summer after the veteran decided to reduce his playing schedule.

LaCava has since been with Dustin Johnson, with whom he was working at this week’s Tour Championship.

“Joe is an outstanding caddie, and I have known him for many years,” said 35-year-old Woods.

Great Golf Courses | Number 3 | Augusta National

Augusta has to be one of my favourite courses of all time, it hosts the second biggest Major of the year ‘The Masters’. Every year when it comes around you can feel the excitement growing around all golf fans as it’s the sign that spring is here and the golf season is a about to get underway again!

Augusta is the most picturesque golf course in the world with its amazing array of flowers and shrubs. Augusta is known best for it’s fast and sloping greens which can make the best players in the world look foolish at times, and it’s usually the person that handles the greens the best that goes on to win.

The course has had to be extended over the years to cope with the advances of technology as it was playing a little bit to easy at one stage, but its back to its toughest again now stretching over 7,400 yards.  The course has 10 par 4’s, 4 par 3’s and 4 par 5’s.

Past Winners include:  Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, and  Phil Mickleson.

Nick Price and Greg Norman share the course record which stands at 63.

The mystery of how Bobby Jones and course designer Alister MacKenzie  first met — and how Jones arrived at picking MacKenzie to design Augusta National Golf Club — has never been fully explained.

The golfer and architect created their masterpiece in the early 1930s, and it is the center of attention each spring as the home of the Masters Tournament.

Woods Confirms New Tournament Schedule

Tiger Woods has confirmed that he intends to play in the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club, California in early October.

Woods, who has dropped from number 1 to 38th in the world following his recent personal and injury problems, is keen to regain form after being selected as a wildcard for the USA Presidents Cup team in November.

“I always enjoy competing in my home state, and this tournament fits my schedule perfectly,” said Woods, who missed the cut at the recent US PGA.

US Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples recently warned Woods to sharpen his game by playing in more tournaments but last week assured the 14-time major champion that he would be one of his two picks for the event, well in advance of the official team announcement on 26 September.

Royal St. George’s – Host to the 2011 Open Championship in which Darren Clarke Won his first major title, the thirteenth Open held at this fantastic golf course. The first Open was held in 1894 and was won by J H Taylor.

Designed by Laidlaw Purves in 1887, the Club has a distinguished golfing history and is proud to have hosted many amateur and professional tournaments.

As well as the history surrounding the club, it is regarded as one of the world’s best golf courses.  The undulating fairways, deep strategically placed bunkers and fast, true greens will prove a test to all standards of golfer. People say it’s not that toughest course unless the wind blows but I beg to differ!

There is a full range of practice facilities including an open air driving range, pitching area, practice nets and practice putting green with bunkers. People say it’s not that toughest course unless the wind blows but I beg to differ!

The Course itself is a par 70 consisting of 12 par 4’s, 4 par 3’s, and 2 par 5’s and is 7,204 yards off the Championship tees.

US PGA Day One Review

Anticipation was high as day one got underway at the final major of the year ‘ The PGA Championship’ and it didn’t disappoint. Expectation was once again on Woods and he was one of the first out in the morning and got off to a flyer birdieing three of the first five of his front nine (teeing off from the 10th) and then to everyone’s amazement dropped 10 shots on the way back to the club house to card a round of 77 (+7)

McIlroy’s round was as equally dramatic for different reasons after finding his tee shot on the third had come to rest up against a tree root (Montgomorie commentating for Sky Sports said ‘ I hope he doesn’t hit this ball for the sake of his career). The Inexperienced Mcilroy proceeded to hit the ball and was badly hurt as a result, to his credit he continued with constant on course treatment and scrambled around an incredibly tough golf course with only one hand on the club at times producing Seve like recovery’s and holing some clutch putts, McIlroy carded a Level par round of 70.

With all this drama going on, the limelight was taken away from Steve Stricker who had a putt for the first 62 in a major championship ever which unfortunately shaved the hole, still his 63 was enough to give him a two shot lead heading into day two.

Scott And Caddie Williams Win WGC Invitational

Adam Scott has won the WGC Invitational by four shots after a superb final round of 65 in Ohio.

The Australian, leading from day one, finish on 17 under, ahead of Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald, who both shot 66.

Rory McIlroy shared sixth place at 10 under after a robust 67, while Lee Westwood was just behind after a fine 65.

However the big story of the tournament centres not around Adam Scott himself, but his caddie Steve Williams, who was sacked by Tiger Woods just a fortnight ago. Incredibly  it was Williams’ eighth victory at the event, having won the event seven times while working with Woods.

Woods himself finished way behind Scott, tied in 37th place.

Tiger Woods Impresses In Comeback

Tiger Woods shot an impressive opening round of 68 in the first round of the WGC Invitational in Akron, Ohio, in his first golfing action in twelve weeks.

Woods parred the first nine holes and dropped only one stroke all round as he finished on two under, six shots behind leader Adam Scott, who co-incidentally has employed the services of Tiger’s ex-caddie Steve Williams.

Open champion Darren Clarke, playing alongside good friend Woods,  shot a disappointing 77, while Lee Westwood shot 67 and world number one Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy 68’s.

Going into day two of the tournament, Australian Scott leads compatriot Jason Day by one shot.

Woods’ Comeback Nearly Underway

Tiger Woods‘ comeback from injury will get underway at around 6.40pm (BST) this evening, as he tees off  at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods has been paired with British Open champion Darren Clarke at Firestone Country Club in Ohio, USA,  and will have childhood friend Bryon Bell caddying for him, having ended his long-standing relationship with Steve Williams in July.

Woods has not won a tournament since 2009 and is now ranked 28 in the world, but appears to have put his injury problems firmly behind him.

“I’m excited – excited to compete, to play and hopefully win the golf tournament,” he said. “The great thing is I don’t feel a thing. It feels solid, it feels stable, no pain.

“One of the reasons why I took as long as I did to come back is that I want to get to this point where I can go ahead and start playing golf again like this.

“It’s been a very long time, and it feels good to be able to go out there today and hit balls like this, go practise and feel nothing and walk around and pretty much do anything I want on the golf course.”

Woods Set To Return To Golf Next Week

Tiger Woods looks set to return to the game at next week’s Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

The former world number 1 has not played competitively since  May due to injuries to his knee and Achilles.

“I’m excited to get back out there,” Woods said on his website.

Woods has some catching up to do in the rankings, having dropped to number 21 going into the tournament. It will also be a transitional time for him as he prepares to move forward with a new caddie having recently split with long-time caddie Steve Williams – although he is yet to officially announce a replacement.

Woods has not won a tournament worldwide since 2009 – I’m sure all eyes will be on him at next week’s event…

Open Championship Preview

Following my article yesterday on who I’m backing to win the British Open, it’s time to get excited as this time tomorrow we will be well underway.

There seems to be more interest than usual in this historic tournament and I would put that down to the amazing form of Rory McIlroy and also the absence of a certain Tiger Woods.

Should McIlroy repeat his amazing achievement at Congressional, the 22-year-old will become the youngest Open champion since 1893, only a few weeks after becoming the youngest winner of the US Open since 1923.

He has played in the tournament three times previously, in 2007 as an amateur, and then in 2009, and last year when he finished joint third.

The BBC will be providing some epic coverage of the tournament, showing over 40 hours live over the four days.

The coverage starts tomorrow at 0900 BST, a lot of the coverage will be via the red button and also freely available on the BBC website.

Talking of the BBC website – there’s a great article here called ‘The A-Z Of The British Open‘ – well worth a read if you’ve got five minutes!

I’ll be providing my own round-up and views across the next four days so stay tuned and look out for my updates on Facebook and Twitter too.
