Lawrie Back In Top 50 After Win In Qatar

Paul Lawrie has finally made his way back in to the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking’s for the first time since 2003 after a superb performance gave him a second Commercialbank Qatar Masters.

The 43 year old Scot, chipped in twice during a brilliant closing 65 and beat Australian Jason Day and Swede Peter Hanson by four shots.

Lawrie has struggled since his famous 1999 Open Championship victory at Carnoustie, and less than a year ago he was 272nd in the Official World Golf Rankings. Now he is part of golf’s elite group again.

Winning the Qatar Masters guarantees him a place in the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play in Arizona later this month and the 24-man Volvo World Match Play in Spain in May.

Qatar Masters Cut To 54 Holes

Winds of up to 45mph meant that less than three hours’ play was possible on the second day of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters which has now been cut to just 54 holes.

They decided at 2pm to call off play for the day and announced soon afterwards by tournament director David Probyn that the sponsors did not want the event to carry into Monday.

Many of the players are also entered for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic next week which they hope will go ahead.

“The course is still on the verge of playable, but there’s no point sending the guys out for an hour or two on a marginal course,” Probyn said.

“The winds will be down a notch tomorrow and decreasing during the day, while the forecast for Sunday is for much calmer conditions.”

Donald receives two PGA awards from the US

Luke Donald’s run of awards continued when he returned to his winter home in the US earlier this week for a reception at the PGA of America Headquarters, where he received two more awards from his stunning 2011 season.

Luke spends his winters in Palm Beach Gardens ( sounds cold and horrible doesn’t it! ), and was honoured by PGA staff as he picked up his first PGA of America Player of the Year Award and Vardon Trophy. Donald won both awards last season, becoming the first Englishman ever to win both in the same golfing year. Donald is just the second Briton to earn the Vardon Trophy, based upon lowest adjusted scoring average. The trophy was first presented to “Lighthorse” Harry Cooper in 1937.

The PGA Player of the Year, first presented in 1948, was last presented to an Englishman called Nick Faldo, it was back in 1990 when he took the honour.

Lee Westwood has admitted to being a notoriously slow starter, but insists he is ready to hit the ground running at this week’s Qatar Masters.

Westwood finished 17th on his first start of the season in Abu Dhabi last week, but that was not good enough to prevent Rory McIlroy snatching his World Number Two spot as he finished second and was just pipped to the finish by Englishman Robert Rock.

Westwood failed to get a top-ten finish on The European Tour in the first four months of 2011, but in 2009 he finished third at Doha and the 38 year old feels he is ready to go two places better this week after a very strong finish to 2011.

Westwood partners Thomas Björn and Jason Day over the first two days, and thinks that Jason Day – a runner-up at last year’s Masters Tournament and US Open Championship – could be one to look out for in 2012.

Thorbjørn Olesen overtook round one leader Rory McIlroy as the Northern Irishman incurred a two stroke penalty at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

Just off the green in two, McIlroy made the mistake of brushing away sand that was not on the putting surface and the penalty was imposed. ( You can brush away sand that is on the green but not off it. )

Joint overnight leader with Swede Robert Karlsson, the US Open Champion had come back from a bad start with three birdies when his rules error came on the ninth hole.

The World Number Three also had a double bogey on the third and did well to avoid another on the 11th, but six birdies kept him in the chase for the title going into the weekend.

Martin Kaymer goes into the HSBC Golf Championship this week believing he is under the radar as he looks to continue his phenomenal record in the Abu Dhabi Tournament.

The World Number Four has won the event two years running at  the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, having finished second in 2009 and first in 2008.

Such a great track record would usually make the former US PGA Championship winner a hot favourite, but an incredibly strong field has come together in the desert to the extent that Kaymer does not even consider his three-ball with Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia the main attraction. ( I think he’s talking about Tiger! )

“I’m not playing in that group tomorrow, if you want to call it the best group to watch or the most entertaining. I know that people will want see Tiger, the Number One in the world [Luke Donald] and Rory McIlroy so that’s a great group to watch.

I for one can’t wait to see these great players battling it out around a truly superb golf course! Make sure you tune in tomorrow to get all the latest scores.

Ernie keen to get back to winning ways

Ernie Els is for looking for his local knowledge to give him a helping hand to get him back to winning ways again in this week’s Volvo Golf Champions at Fancourt.

The 23-time European Tour winner has gone more than 12 months now since his last victory, but insists he is more determined than ever to get back to his best form.

“My work ethic and my determination, especially this year, is more than ever because I had such a dismal season last year,” said Els.

The 42 year old is under no illusions as to which part of his game needs to be improved on in order to reenter the winner’s circle.

“I’m hitting the ball beautifully,” he added. “Really I’m very happy with my ball striking. I’m still working on the flat stick. Hopefully that behaves itself this week, and I think I can have a very good chance.

Jeev Milkha Singh says he can sense a strong finish on the way , if not  even a victory, when he tees it up being fully fit again at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, starting at the Emirates Golf Club from February 9-12.

The 40 year old, who last won on the European Tour back  in June 2008, endured a series of career-threatening injuries to his wrist, shoulders, ankle and lower back, forcing him to cut down his playing schedule considerably.

“Injuries did a take toll on my body. I won’t be able to play that many tournaments in a season as I used to, but good thing is that I have achieved the level of fitness I need to compete on the Tour,” said Singh,  the first Indian golfer to play in all four Majors and break into the top 30 of the world rankings.

He will be looking to put the last 2 years of injury behind him and hopefully have a strong season ahead.

2012 A Great Year Of Golf Ahead

Hello everyone, hope you all had a great New Year’s celebrations and are looking forward to the year ahead as much as me!

We’ve all got a lot to look forward to this year golf wise, it’s a Ryder Cup year again, can’t believe it was well over a year ago since our boys lifted the cup at Celtic Manor, let’s hope they can do it again in America this September.

We’ve got all the four majors to look forward to as well, which I think could be one of the most exciting years ever for majors as there are so many high quality players around now and it is wide open to all of them. Last year we saw four new major winners, and I think some of them names will repeat the same feat this year.

On a personal note I’m looking forward to getting back to teaching, and getting my lessons to improve even more. I saw some great results with my lessons last year and feel they can all take a massive step this year to becoming really good players and achieve their goals much quicker than they could have ever expected to.

So here’s to 2012, look forward to seeing you all practising and look forward to teaching you all!
