Poulter and Rose Looking To Win Another WGC Title

Justin Rose and Ian Poulter are looking to turn their very impressive team record into individual success this week at Mission Hills in the WGC – HSBC Champions.

The pair have represented England twice in the World Cup at Mission Hills finishing fourth and second in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

But this week they will both be competing individually for the their second World Golf Championship and there was some strange questions at the press conference. Rose asked Poulter how he could beat them this week as he was in such good form, to which Poulter said that Justin was ”better off the tee and hit more greens than him but just needed to improve with the putter”

Not bad advice from one of the best putters in the world and maybe as they are best friends Poulter should give him some advice on the greens?

Once the banter was out of the way, Poulter said that his experience of Mission Hills and the fact he has partnered Ross Fisher here twice – could be a big advantage for him.

Rose could take a big step to chasing down McIlroy this week….. should be another weekend of exciting golf ahead.

Rose Looking To Jump McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is being chased down in the battle for the Race to Dubai. Justin Rose will give everything he’s got to try and hunt down the World No.1 Rory McIlroy and take the title that the Northern Irishman already has one hand on.

Rose currently standing at No. 5 in the world is lying second in the standings but with up to $7m up for grabs this week at the BMW Masters in Shanghai, The Englishman knows a huge week here could see him catch his Ryder Cup team-mate.

Rose will be playing alongside Westwood and McIlroy in the final group that gets started on tomorrow morning. Can Rose pull it out the bag?

Tiger To Captain USA In Ryder Cup?

Tiger Woods has come out and said that being given the chance to captain America in the Ryder Cup would be a “huge honour” for him and that he would love to have the chance to do so.

The world No.2 who has only been part of one winning Ryder Cup team out of the last seven and was part of the most recent encounter at Medinah when America got thumped in the final day singles.

Woods who was partnered with Steve Stricker, lost all three of his matches on the Friday and Saturday and only managed a half in the singles on the Sunday when he sportingly gave Francesco Molinari a 5 foot putt to allow Europe to win the Ryder Cup having already retained it after comebacks from Poulter, Rose, Westwood, Garcia and Kaymer.

Woods has a got a very poor record in the Ryder Cup and questions have been asked whether he was really interested in the competition.

Woods said “It would be a huge honour, hopefully it doesn’t happen in the near future as I would like to play in many more Ryder Cups“.

The Ryder Cup Is Underway

Well the Ryder Cup is under way with Graeme McDowell hitting the first tee-shot which went left and just stopped short of trouble. Jim Furyk did pretty much the same as well. It just shows that even the straightest hitters on the tour get affected by nerves.

Ian Poulter was interviewed half an hour before the first group tee-off and he said it was the most excited he’d ever felt and that it doesn’t get any bigger than this. Poulter and Rose are playing against Woods and Stricker and I think he’s right, it doesn’t get much bigger than that.

The first few holes have all been halved as I write this, with players being a little bit cautious which is understandable, but i’m sure it won’t take long to get going.

Three long day’s in front of the TV ahead, I hope you will enjoy as much as I will.

Snedeker On High As European Players Struggle

Last night saw Brandt Snedeker win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup as he claimed he felt like a lottery winner after his victory in Atlanta earning him a staggering £7million.

The American won by 3 shots over Justin Rose after a nerveless final round – The challenge from world No.1 Rory McIlroy’s and world no.2 Tiger Woods never materialised after both got off to poor starts and could never recover.

Snedeker carded 68 in his final 18 holes to finish on 10-under par.

“It’s a little bit crazy,” said Snedeker.

Luke Donald shot a three under par final round to finish third and get himself into the top 10 of the overall FedEx standings.

Lee Westwood had another bad at the office and finished last in the thirty man field, hopefully he can find form going into Friday morning in The Ryder Cup.

The signs weren’t encouraging for the European players, let’s hope that the had their mind on Medinah already otherwise we could be in trouble!

Rose Has One Eye On Race To Dubai Heading Into US PGA Championship

Well as we head into this week and the final Major of the season at Kiawah Island Justin Rose will be looking to extend his lead in The Race to Dubai after targeting The European Tour’s ultimate prize at the start of the season which seems like a long time but we are at the business end of the season now.

The Englishman from Hampshire has led The Race to Dubai since finishing second place at the BMW PGA Championship at the sun soaked Wentworth Club back in May and Rose would love to be crowned The European Tour’s Number One player for the second time in his career.

Rose extended his lead last week over Ernie Els after finishing tied fifth alongside Rory McIlroy at last week’s WGC – Bridgestone Invitational and he is confident the good form he is showing can continue on the Ocean Course this week.

Rose holds on after late charge from McIlroy and Watson

England’s Justin Rose notched up his fourth on the USPGA Tour at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, in Florida.

Rose from Hampshire was three shots back to Bubba Watson at the start of the day and had it all to do seeing how Bubba had been playing over the first three days.

But, with Watson making mistake after mistake, and world number one Rory McIlroy’s late charge just falling short even after a holed out bunker for eagle in the closing four holes and Tiger Woods retiring with an Achilles injury , Rose held his nerve.

A final round two-under 70 was enough to win by a shot from Watson, who missed a 10-foot birdie putt at 18 after probably the shot of the week from the right hand side rough after a wayward drive.

“There’s been a lot of hard work going on in my game,” said Rose. “And days like this make it all worthwhile.

Former world number one Donald had a respectable week finishing on -12 and showed some of the form which got him to the top spot in the first place.

Roll on the Masters!

Rose Wins In Chicago

Justin Rose has sealed his place at the Tour Championship in Atlanta by winning the BMW Championship in a battling final round.

Rose, 31, chipped in for birdie on the 17th hole after admitting he nearly opted to putt it from the edge of the green and hung on to win, finishing with an even-par 71 at Cog Hill, near Chicago, for a two-shot victory over John Senden

The Englishman had watched a five-shot lead over Australian John Senden shorten to one until the birdie chip gave him the cushion for a third PGA Tour title.

Rose played bravely and later admitted: “I took on a few crazy shots.”

The world number 17 added: “The manner in which I won this tournament, it rates as high as the best tournament I’ve ever won, just by going wire-to-wire.

“I think mentally this is the best I’ve ever been in terms of being very under control with my emotions, being very calm, being very aware of the situation and feeling comfortable with it.

“I may have had better ball striking weeks as a whole but I think this week as a competitor and as a professional, I think it was probably my best ever performance.”

Having started his round nervously, with a bogey at the par-three second, Rose got back on track with birdies on the sixth and seventh.

Another bogey followed on the ninth and he was fortunate to escape with a six on the par-five 15th after a wayward tee-shot which flew into the trees.

He held a one-shot lead over Senden going up the 17th, but after a poor approach a brilliantly holed chip for birdie effectively handed him the title with Senden only managing a par after putting his second shot in the bunker from the middle of the fairway.

Rose then hit a pumping drive up the 18th and left himself a 5 iron in on the tough par 4 and two putted for victory.

Rory Pulls Out Of Seve Trophy

US Open champion Rory McIlroy has pulled out of Great Britain and Ireland’s team for the Seve Trophy.

22-year-old Rory was part of the winning side two years ago and cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal had said he wanted to see as mny big names as possible play especially the US Open Champion.

But McIlroy said he wanted some time off, as he had 12 weeks on the road ahead to look forward to.”I want to spend some time at home and do a few things before I head off on that big run,” said McIlroy.

Britain’s Lee Westwood has yet to confirm his attendance while world number one Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Martin Laird and Justin Rose are likely to be absent because of the FedEx Cup play-offs in America.

McIlroy is due to tee of in the first round of the European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland on Thursday in his first event since injuring his right arm at the US PGA Championship earlier this month.

“Now it’s not painful,” he said. “It’s more like a numb sensation, like if someone gives you a dead arm.

“It’s nearly 100% and I’m happy with it.”

The world number six has been in the United States with new girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, the current No.1 tennis player in the world as she is currently playing at the US open.

A Week In Golf: Round-Up

It’s been a week of mixed weather but great to see so many golfers practising and playing, also great to see so many youngsters out there too, hopefully inspired by Rory McIlroy’s US Open win which is still dominating the golf headlines nearly two weeks on!
