Start To Learn Golf On The Driving Range

The best place to start in terms of learning to play golf is on the driving range.

Dukes Meadows Golf offers a high-standard 50-bay floodlit range which is perfect for all standards of golfer to practice on.

All you need to do is purchase a bucket of balls from the Pro Shop (you can also rent clubs if you don’t have your own as yet) and then go and hit them out onto the range.

There are yard markers positioned right across the range so you can easily see how far you are hitting the ball. There are also handy greens and flags to aim at too – vital for learning what it’s like out on  a proper golf course.

The World Cup of golf that fails to inspire

In most other sports a World Cup is the pinnacle but in golf it is merely another lucrative week for those able to shoe-horn playing for their country into their busy schedules.

At the weekend the United States claimed victory in China having sent a team comprising their fifth and 17th ranked players.

Matt Kuchar, at number 11 in the world, was the highest placed American willing to make the trip in the week of Thanksgiving and had managed to persuade Gary Woodland to be his partner for an event that should command far more prestige than it does.

Adult Group Golf Tuition Dates Coming Soon For 2012

Group Lessons are a great way for beginners and intermediate players to give golf a try and see how they like it.

Playing with up to five other golfers of a similar standard to yourself, I give six lessons across six weeks, with each lesson focused on a different aspect of the game. It’s cheaper than taking individual lessons and also enables you to build friendships within the sport, ready to play a friendly match against each other when you’re ready to get out onto the course for the first time.

Before that there’s always the opportunity to get to know each other better in the bar, preferably after the lesson though!

Keep an eye out for the forthcoming dates at the start of 2012 soon to be published here on James Irons Golf.

SA players battle to read lines at the 2011 Mission Hills World Cup of Golf in China

Twice the South Africans nearly holed monstrous approach shots on Friday, but it was their putting which prevented them making a bigger move in the second round of the Omega Mission Hills World Cup.

Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen nevertheless carded a four-under-par 68 in the difficult foursomes format, one of five countries who managed to do so hitting alternate shots, and it took them to eight-under-par for the tournament, five off the pace set by first round leaders Australia and now shared at halfway by Ireland.

Holing Out From 10 Feet Or Less by James Irons

In the recent 2011 US Masters, Lee Westwood hit virtually every single green in regulation but struggled with the putter from close in – had he been on any sort of putting form he would have almost certainly won the tournament.

Here’s how to make those short putts count:

Holing Out From Ten Feet Or Less

At address, I am looking for my forearms to be parallel to each other, aiming towards the target.

Holing Out From Ten Feet Or Less

Next up is making sure my eyeline is directly above the ball

Holing Out From 10 Feet Or Less

The Putter Face should be pointing directly at my intended target.

Holing Out From 10 Feet Or Less

I am now looking for the Putter Face to stay on line and the stroke to remain on my intended target line throughout.

Holing Out From 10 Feet Or Less

Any deviation away from this will result in missed putts left and right.

See Your Swing On Video During Your Golf Lesson

One of the disadvantages of hitting balls on the range is that although you are getting a feel for how to hit the ball during your lesson, it’s difficult to physically see what you’re doing as you’re actually doing it.

This is where my video tuition can come in really useful.

I can film your swing and show it back to you there and then. What’s more – I can show you ‘before and after’ clips on a split-screen so that you can see, and more importantly understand the difference for yourself. I can even compare your swing to Tiger Woods if you like!

Woods suffers the biggest matchplay defeat of his career

Tiger Woods suffered the biggest matchplay defeat of his career as Adam Scott and KJ Choi hammered him and Steve Stricker 7&6 in the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.

The defeat equalled the biggest-ever losing margin at the tournament.

It was the first time Woods had faced his former caddie Steve Williams, who apologised for words he admitted could be “construed as racist” this month.

Despite the loss, the United States lead 4-2 after day one of the event.

Scottish Open retains traditional July slot before The Open

The European Tour has finally announced that the Scottish Open will retain its customary position on the golf calendar for another year.

The tournament’s future was cast in a shadow of doubt following the withdrawal of main sponsor Barclay’s.

This year’s tournament was moved to Castle Stuart after being held at Loch Lomond from 1996 and the links course near Inverness will be the 2012 venue.

The European Tour also guaranteed that prize money for the event will remain at the same level for next year’s event.

“While the Tour is still in discussion with sponsors, we can also assure the total prize money will be the same as this year, and that is £3m,” said chief operating officer Keith Waters.

After Barclays’s surprise withdrawal, a number of other tournament administrators were keen to secure the event’s place on the calendar but Waters confirmed the Highland course will host the tournament from July 12-15, a week before the biggest Major in world golf, which this year is being held at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club.

An expected 250,000 spectators will heading for the Lancashire coast for the duration of the 2012 Championship.
