13 years ago Paul Lawrie was  given the chance to hit the first tee shot of The 1999 Ryder Cup in Brookline, and the memories of it still give him the shivers today, but after making his debut (not long after his British Open win) in golf’s greatest team event Lawrie can’t wait for a second bite at the cherry.

The Scot has held a strong position on the Ryder Cup Qualification Lists, but for months has refused to accept he was a certainty for the 12 strong team bound for Chicago, and he now can’t be caught even in this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and is finally prepared to talk openly about his return to the Ryder Cup.

There is still one place remaining out of the ten automatic qualifiers with Nicolas Colsaerts bidding to become the first Belgian golfer to play in The Ryder Cup, needing a finish of no worse than second. Good luck this week Nicolas, I would love to see him in the team.

Adam Scott To Bounce Back After Open

Ernie Els and Adam Scott will be reunited for the first time since their Open Championship battle at this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Adam Scott will be defending his title and will also want to bounce back after the disappointment at Royal Lytham & St Annes a fortnight ago.

The big easy won his fourth Major Championship at Scott’s expense, but the Australian  from Adelaide will be looking to get revenge upon his return to Akron, having beaten a world-class field to seal his maiden World Golf Championship title there 12 months ago.

Els who has twice won the WGC-Cadillac Championship – boasts a relatively modest record at Firestone Country Club, with a fifth place finish on his first appearance back in 1999 his best performance in 12 visits to Ohio. Plus I think Els will still be on high from The Open and his mind won’t quite be on the job and he will struggle this week.

I’m going to be bold and go for a Adam Scott win, I think he will desperate to prove he can bounce back from what happened two weeks ago, not only to himself but to his peers.

Irish Open To Hit Record Sales

Today the European Tour announced that it’s taking the unprecedented step of telling all fans who are planning to attend the Irish Open to buy their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment of missing out on the action at Royal Portrush Golf Club in June.

At the Northern Ireland Tourist Board headquarters in Belfast, the European Tour, as event organisers, also told about detailed Traffic and Transportation plans including adding a Translink coach, rail and Park & Ride services. These are designed to ensure that spectators have ease of access to the event, and to minimise the disruption to the neighbouring community on the roads surrounding Portrush.

Pre-tournament ticket sales for the event, being staged in Northern Ireland for the first time in nearly 60 years, have exceeded all expectations.

The first day of the tournament is on the 28th June,

13 year old Guan Tian-lang misses cut at China Open

Guan Tian-lang has sadly missed the chance to become the youngest golfer in history to make the cut in a European Tour event at the China Open.

The amateur, who on Thursday became the Tour’s youngest player at 13 years, 173 days, missed the cut by 10 shots leaving him on 12 over par for the two rounds.

The halfway lead is shared by Gary Boyd and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet on 11 under after they both shot 67 today.

Boyd, birdied five of his last eight holes, and said: “I had to stay patient and was one over playing my ninth hole but managed to get on in two and two putt for birdie and really get my round going.

Branden Grace who eagled the par 4 seventh is on his own in third place, while Nicolas Colsaerts is solely in fourth.
