Scott And Caddie Williams Win WGC Invitational

Adam Scott has won the WGC Invitational by four shots after a superb final round of 65 in Ohio.

The Australian, leading from day one, finish on 17 under, ahead of Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald, who both shot 66.

Rory McIlroy shared sixth place at 10 under after a robust 67, while Lee Westwood was just behind after a fine 65.

However the big story of the tournament centres not around Adam Scott himself, but his caddie Steve Williams, who was sacked by Tiger Woods just a fortnight ago. Incredibly  it was Williams’ eighth victory at the event, having won the event seven times while working with Woods.

Woods himself finished way behind Scott, tied in 37th place.

Tiger Woods Impresses In Comeback

Tiger Woods shot an impressive opening round of 68 in the first round of the WGC Invitational in Akron, Ohio, in his first golfing action in twelve weeks.

Woods parred the first nine holes and dropped only one stroke all round as he finished on two under, six shots behind leader Adam Scott, who co-incidentally has employed the services of Tiger’s ex-caddie Steve Williams.

Open champion Darren Clarke, playing alongside good friend Woods,  shot a disappointing 77, while Lee Westwood shot 67 and world number one Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy 68’s.

Going into day two of the tournament, Australian Scott leads compatriot Jason Day by one shot.

Woods’ Comeback Nearly Underway

Tiger Woods‘ comeback from injury will get underway at around 6.40pm (BST) this evening, as he tees off  at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods has been paired with British Open champion Darren Clarke at Firestone Country Club in Ohio, USA,  and will have childhood friend Bryon Bell caddying for him, having ended his long-standing relationship with Steve Williams in July.

Woods has not won a tournament since 2009 and is now ranked 28 in the world, but appears to have put his injury problems firmly behind him.

“I’m excited – excited to compete, to play and hopefully win the golf tournament,” he said. “The great thing is I don’t feel a thing. It feels solid, it feels stable, no pain.

“One of the reasons why I took as long as I did to come back is that I want to get to this point where I can go ahead and start playing golf again like this.

“It’s been a very long time, and it feels good to be able to go out there today and hit balls like this, go practise and feel nothing and walk around and pretty much do anything I want on the golf course.”

Bahrain Dropped From European Tour Schedule

The European Tour has announced that Bahrain will not be a part of its 2012 schedule, following a crackdown on anti-government protesters that has killed over 30 people.

The Royal Golf Club, designed by last year’s Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, was set to host the Volvo Golf Champions event early next year.

“With work still ongoing to resolve issues in Bahrain and the need to confirm the venue by the end of July 2011, the difficult decision to postpone the event for 2012 was taken,” the Tour said in a statement.

“We know that Bahrain is working hard to address the issues it has faced in recent months, as well as to reach out to the international community,” said George O’Grady from the European Tour.

“We, together with the European Tour players, look forward to returning and building on that first, very successful, event in the future.”

Great Golf Apps: Number 7

Next up in my look at the best golf apps out there, is iGolf Rules.

Golf Digest says that it’s “the best effort yet to decipher the Rules of Golf.”

The golf industry awarded it “Best New Product” at its two largest golf trade shows.

And more than half a million people  are using it in more than 50 countries.

It’s a little on the pricey side, but well worth a look to solve those on-course arguments!

Dyson Wins Irish Open

Simon Dyson yesterday won the Irish Open beating Richard Green by one shot.

Green had a long putt to win the championship on the 18th but bogied the hole which gave the tournament (his fifth European Tour victory) to Dyson on 15 under.

Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher holed a huge putt for birdie on the last which gave him a respectable third place finish.

David Howell, joint leader going into the final day with Dyson and Green, disappointed with a 73 on the Killarney course.

Peter Lawrie was Ireland’s best-placed golfer on nine under while Irish amateur Paul Cutler will be pleased with his week’s work, finishing on five under.

Dyson had just three bogeys all week and his win earns him a place in this week’s Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

Woods Set To Return To Golf Next Week

Tiger Woods looks set to return to the game at next week’s Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

The former world number 1 has not played competitively since  May due to injuries to his knee and Achilles.

“I’m excited to get back out there,” Woods said on his website.

Woods has some catching up to do in the rankings, having dropped to number 21 going into the tournament. It will also be a transitional time for him as he prepares to move forward with a new caddie having recently split with long-time caddie Steve Williams – although he is yet to officially announce a replacement.

Woods has not won a tournament worldwide since 2009 – I’m sure all eyes will be on him at next week’s event…

Clarke Tells Critics To ‘Get A Life’

Darren Clarke has told those who criticised his celebrations after his Open Championship victory to “get a life”.

In his own words, Clarke had “quite a few drinks” after his win at Sandwich, however this has led to criticism from certain parties.

“There’s been a little bit of chat about ‘he shouldn’t have had a drink, he shouldn’t have done this, he shouldn’t have done that’. People are concerned about whether or not I had one pint too many. I mean, get a life – it’s sport” said Clarke on Wednesday.

Hopefully Darren has fully recovered as he joins fellow Northern-Irishman and US Open champion Rory McIlroy at the Irish Open, which kicked-off this morning.

Weather Causes Havoc For Golfers In Sweden

Rory McIlroy recently blamed the weather for his indifferent performance at the British Open earlier in the month. I commented at the time that this seemed a little sour as the conditions were the same for all golfers, and that’s simply one of the challenges you face, particularly on a links course.

However for the golfers taking part in the Nordea Scandinavian Masters last Sunday, I have some sympathy!

Held at Bro Hof Slott, near Stockholm (a course considered for the 2018 Ryder Cup), the wind caused mayhem, leading to some unprecedented high scores.

“I’ve never seen wind like this in Sweden,” said Alex Noren, who won with a closing 77 after shooting a course record 63 in the third round.

“The only thing I thought of all day was the 17th. I said it doesn’t matter how I play up to that, I just have to survive 17 – and I did.”

The 17th is a 164 yard island green – tricky at the best of times!

Noren somehow parred the hole and three of the 65 players – Scott Hend, Pablo Martin and Jeev Milkha Singh even managed birdies.

There were five triple-bogey sixes, including one from runner-up Richard Finch in an otherwise incredible 69, the lowest round of the day by three shots.

There were also four sevens, one eight, two nines , an 11 from Steve Webster and a 12 from last year’s Italian Open winner Fredrik Andersson Hed.

That gave Hed an inward half of 49 and a round of 90, but there was worse to come from one particular golfer.

Scot Alastair Forsyth, one of those who took seven, also scored a 10 on the 13th, while Webster carded a 91, with 22 of those on the three short holes on the back nine – seven at the 175-yard 11th, four at the 212-yard 16th and then his 11.

Sounds like a nightmare – would be interesting to see the Ryder Cup played in those conditions!

Great Golf Courses | Number 1 | Wentworth (West Course)

Welcome to the first of my posts looking at the best golf courses in Britain.

To kick things off, let’s take a look at one of my favourite courses, the famous West Course at Wentworth.

There is a tremendous flow and variety to this course, with lots of elevation changes and different length par-3s, par-4s and par-5s to total a challenging Par 73.

The original design of the course, by Harry Colt in 1926, was in recent years becoming too easily challenged by the standard of today’s golfer and the golfing technology available, so with the help of Ernie Els, the course was carefully modernised, with holes lengthened and bunkers re-positioned where necessary and appropriate.

The course re-opened in 2010 following the construction of 18 brand new greens, built to USGA specifications.

Here are some Wentworth West Course Stats:

Wentworth

Opened: 1926
Architect: Harry Colt (modernised/refined between 2005 & 2010 by Ernie Els)
