Bjorn Again In The Ryder Cup?

Thomas Bjorn has been in a rich vain of form recently and after his win at the European Masters in Switzerland at the weekend he has propelled himself to the top of the European Ryder Cup points list.

Although he’s  been playing well, it was his first win since he won the same event two years ago and the 14th of his career.

Former peers have been taking notice and Northern Irishman Darren Clarke has tipped him to make the team at Gleneagles next September .

Bjorn has been involved in many Ryder Cup over the years, not only as a player but as a vice captain as well, but he will want to be teeing it up as a player next time round for sure. I mean, who wouldn’t?

McIlroy and Bjorn top leaderboard at halfway stage

Thomas Björn gave McIlroy a timely reminder of what happened five months ago after joining Rory in the halfway lead at the Dubai Desert Classic.

US Open Champion McIlroy justified his position after entering the tournament as favourite by adding a 65 to his first round 66 to reach 13 under par.

Bjorn has matched him shot-for-shot so far and now finds himself in a battle with not only the World Number Two, but also with Westwood and Kaymer who are lurking right behind him and ready to pounce.

Kaymer had the first hole-in-one of his life, (yes life) on the 186 yard seventh  as he reached 11 under with a 67, while Lee Westwood‘s 65 for ten under included birdies on the last three holes.

All is set for a another great weekend in Dubai which always seems to have an exciting finish!

Open Championship Day One Review

Tom Lewis, an amateur who had to come through qualifying, is the surprise leader of the British Open Championship after day one, sharing the lead with Danish veteran Thomas Bjorn after the first round.

Bjorn, who went out earlier in the day, shot a five-under 65 and was joined later on by the 20-year-old Lewis.

The pair lead by one from Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover and American debutant Webb Simpson.

Northern Ireland’s 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell and countryman Darren Clarke (playing in his 20th Open!), England’s Simon Dyson (one of my Outside Bets) and Germany’s world number three Martin Kaymer were in a large group on two under.

World number one Luke Donald had a bad day with the putter, shooting 71, (+1), as did Lee Westwood and US Open champion Rory McIlroy, who got off to a shaky start, dropping two shots in his first three holes, fighting back to play the last 15 in one under.

The other star of the day was Dustin Johnson who shot a hole-in-one on the 16th during a roller-coaster round.
