Well the desert swing is over and I think you’ll agree that we saw some great golf!

We saw Robert Rock fight off the challenge of Tiger Woods on the final day and establish himself as a Ryder Cup contender and who knows maybe a major contender?

We saw Paul Lawrie win the Qatar Masters for the second time which saw him back in the world’s top 50 again after a long absence and we’ll also see him fighting for a Ryder Cup spot I believe.

And then we see the young impressive Spaniard Cabrera-Bello win the Dubai Desert Classic beating off Westwood, Kaymer and McIlroy on the final day after shooting a 63 on day one!

Golf in the deserts looks to be a wonderful thing, you can see a lot of the players enjoy playing out there and the condition of the golf courses is always immaculate and the greens look pure. Hopefully one day I will get to play out there.

The hospitality and the hotels look superb as well!

It’s a mild day today so I hope you will be practising at some point, and remember…the good weather and The Masters are just around the corner now. 🙂

McIlroy and Bjorn top leaderboard at halfway stage

Thomas Björn gave McIlroy a timely reminder of what happened five months ago after joining Rory in the halfway lead at the Dubai Desert Classic.

US Open Champion McIlroy justified his position after entering the tournament as favourite by adding a 65 to his first round 66 to reach 13 under par.

Bjorn has matched him shot-for-shot so far and now finds himself in a battle with not only the World Number Two, but also with Westwood and Kaymer who are lurking right behind him and ready to pounce.

Kaymer had the first hole-in-one of his life, (yes life) on the 186 yard seventh  as he reached 11 under with a 67, while Lee Westwood‘s 65 for ten under included birdies on the last three holes.

All is set for a another great weekend in Dubai which always seems to have an exciting finish!

A brilliant nine under par 63 left Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello two shots clear at the Dubai Desert Classic but World Number Two Rory McIlroy had seven birdies in his last ten holes to grab a strong finish in the opening round leaving him only three behind.

It could have been even better for both of them, however.

The European Tour’s first 59 was in sight when Rafael Cabrera-Bello stood on his 12th tee nine under par.

It left him needing four more birdies to achieve the magic number, but the 27 year old Spaniard parred the last seven holes for a 63 and a two stroke lead over German Marcel Siem and Scotland’s Scott Jamieson.

US Open Champion McIlroy was failing to impress and was one over for the tournament and way back in the in the pack until his girlfriend turned up on the 9th which he birdied and it seemed to spark him into life and by the time he almost holed-in-one on the 15th – Scot Stephen Gallacher did make an ace there – he was up to five under and right up there.

Lets hope McIlroy’s girlfriend turns up again tomorrow for all our sakes!!

Well golfers, this year is flying already and it’s great to see so many of you braving the cold weather and getting down to the range to hone your skills for the coming season.

It’s not the same for the tour players of course, as they are out in the desert sunning themselves up and only having to play 54 holes to win a tournament and a shed load of money! lol. Not that I’m bitter.

The players will have it in the back of their mind that the first major of the year is fast approaching and will be preparing harder than ever to qualify for The Masters if they haven’t done so already.

I’m sure some of you will be having a bet on one, if not all four major’s? So if your struggling to pick someone who you think has a chance of winning then have a look at my picks and see the top 4 players I think can win in all four majors. Good luck and enjoy watching them!

Robert Rock kept at bay 14-time Major winner Tiger Woods and US Open Champion Rory McIlroy at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship to claim a sensational victory.

Robert Rock was 117th in the Official World Golf Ranking coming into this week, Rock said after his one stroke triumph over McIlroy: “I really can’t believe I have done that today.”

Rock shot a two under par 70 to finish 13 under, Woods scrambled his way to a 72 and instead of winning for a second successive time on the comeback trail had to settle for a share of third place with Graeme McDowell and Thomas Björn.

“I was just a touch off,” said the former World Number One, who hit only one fairway on the back nine and only six greens in regulation all day.

McIlroy  runner-up for the second year running, only for the incident when he brushed sand away just off the green midway through his second round, leading to a costly two shot penalty, which he will argue cost him the tournament.

If this is the sign of things to come in the golfing year ahead then I for one am excited!

Thorbjørn Olesen overtook round one leader Rory McIlroy as the Northern Irishman incurred a two stroke penalty at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

Just off the green in two, McIlroy made the mistake of brushing away sand that was not on the putting surface and the penalty was imposed. ( You can brush away sand that is on the green but not off it. )

Joint overnight leader with Swede Robert Karlsson, the US Open Champion had come back from a bad start with three birdies when his rules error came on the ninth hole.

The World Number Three also had a double bogey on the third and did well to avoid another on the 11th, but six birdies kept him in the chase for the title going into the weekend.

McIlroy outshines Woods and Donald

Tiger Woods and Luke Donald were out-shone today by Rory McIlroy who shot a five under par opening round of 67 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

The US Open Champion is sharing  the lead with  Robert Karlsson, while Woods shot a bogey-free round of 70 and World Number One Donald a 71.

German Martin Kaymer shot a surprising 77 , he has been the winner at this event the last two years and three of the last four.

He was playing with Lee Westwood (72) and Sergio Garcia, whose 71 included the first hole-in-one of his career on the European Tour.

McIlroy’s wasn’t at the top of his game, but like Karlsson he scrambled excellently in his first tournament since recovering from suspected Dengue fever.

Martin Kaymer goes into the HSBC Golf Championship this week believing he is under the radar as he looks to continue his phenomenal record in the Abu Dhabi Tournament.

The World Number Four has won the event two years running at  the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, having finished second in 2009 and first in 2008.

Such a great track record would usually make the former US PGA Championship winner a hot favourite, but an incredibly strong field has come together in the desert to the extent that Kaymer does not even consider his three-ball with Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia the main attraction. ( I think he’s talking about Tiger! )

“I’m not playing in that group tomorrow, if you want to call it the best group to watch or the most entertaining. I know that people will want see Tiger, the Number One in the world [Luke Donald] and Rory McIlroy so that’s a great group to watch.

I for one can’t wait to see these great players battling it out around a truly superb golf course! Make sure you tune in tomorrow to get all the latest scores.

Tiger woods influenced by appearance money

Tiger Woods has admitted that appearance money affects which tournaments he chooses to play in.

It’s been rumoured  that he will be getting more than $2m to play in the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship this week plus whatever he wins in the tournament.

The former world number one has chosen to play in the Middle East above Torrey Pines in California which is usually the season opener on the PGA Tour.

Asked whether the payment influenced his scheduling, Woods said: “I’d have to say yes, it certainly does.”

He added: “That’s one of the reasons why a lot of the guys who play in Europe do play in Europe, and they do get paid [appearance fees].

“I think the only tour that doesn’t pay is the US Tour”

Tiger won his last major title, the 2008 US Open, at Torrey Pines and in 12 Tour events at the San Diego course he has won on six occasions.

The last time Tiger played was at his own event , the World Challenge tournament in California to record his first victory for two years.

A Great Year For Golf In 2011

Well what a year it’s been, we’ve seen some great drama in the world of golf over 2011, we’ve seen four new major winners, we’ve seen European golf dominating the world, we’ve seen an Englishman win the money list on both sides of the Atlantic!

But most importantly for the world of golf we’ve seen the return of the worlds best golfer! I don’t need to mention his name.

Europe won the Solheim Cup and GB&I won the Walker Cup. We have two Englishmen at 1& 2 in the world. I find it amazing how the game of golf is being dominated by Europe.

I think the reason for this is the amount of work and money that has been put into junior golf over the past 10-15 years. It has really helped kids in the early teens develop into tremendous golfers which in past years may not have been the case. Long may this continue!

Well I hope you’ve all enjoyed the golfing year, and there’s plenty to look forward to in 2012 including the Ryder Cup, and who knows, we might see Tiger win all four majors to equal the Golden Bear’s record! Okay maybe that’s unlikely, but I wouldn’t put it past him!
