Rookie Claims First PGA Tour Title After Great Battle

Last night at the Greenbrier Classic rookie Ted Potter Jr. held his nerve to beat fellow-American Troy Kelly in a tense play-off.

The 218th ranked player in the world, took victory with a four-foot birdie putt at the par 3 18th which was the third extra hole after a superb tee shot.

Kelly’s  previous best finish on the PGA Tour was tied-37th, and he looked to be heading for victory in regulation play at the $1m tournament at White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia.

But somehow Potter, who was trailing by four shots with five holes to play, managed to finish eagle-birdie for a 64 and a four-round total of 264, which Kelly (66) could only match.

Both players parred at the first extra hole, the 18th, before Potter looked all set to wrap it up at the second, the 17th. But Kelly holed an amazing putt under pressure from 25 feet and Potter missed from five to send them back to 18 again.

It really was a true battle of two players trying to establish themselves on the PGA Tour and both should be proud of their performances.

Tiger Woods Is At Again ( Winning that is… )

Tiger Woods sailed pass Jack Nicklaus on the all-time PGA Tour victory list by winning last night at the AT&T National in Maryland at the age of 36.

He secured his 74th US Tour win by a couple of shots from Bo Van Pelt after a steady final round of 69 leaving him eight under par. He moved his way through the field over the weekend and the final day had a sense of inevitability about it when him and Bo Van Pelt were tied with a few holes to go.

It means Tiger has won more PGA events than any golfer bar Sam Snead, who recorded 82 victories on the Tour.

“To do it at 36, I feel like I have a lot of years ahead of me,” Woods said after his third win of the year.

People said he would never win again six months ago and now he’s won 3 times this year.

Overnight leader Brendon de Jonge had a round of six over par to finish in a share of 11th on one under.

With the Open just around the corner Tiger is priming himself perfectly for the links course in Lytham. Can he do it this time?

Bourdy Takes Lead After Fast Start

Grégory Bourdy gave the chasing pack hope when he failed to capitalise on a fantastic start to his Irish Open second round at Royal Portrush.

Bourdy with Indian Jeev Milkha Singh were joint overnight leaders, he eagled the long second and after ten holes had reached 13 under par – three clear of second place.

But after bogeying the par threes 11th and 14th, the 30 year old’s advantage was back down to one again.

Lorenzo Gagli was in second place on ten under after a 66 while Welshman Jamie Donaldson just one further back following a 67 that contained five successive birdies.

Home favourites Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke both shot 69 to get to five under and four under respectively but still have a lot of work to do if they are to challenge at the weekend.

A Great Week Of Golf Ahead

This week’s AT&T National tournament on the PGA Tour visits Congressional Golf Club in Maryland. The golf club where Rory McIlroy won the US Open by eight shots last year.

The Ulsterman won’t be teeing it up this week though as he is back on home soil for the Irish Open in Portrush.

Congrssional is Situated in Bethesda, just north of Washington DC, and the Blue Course is one of the best known venues on the PGA Tour.

Opened 88 years ago back in 1924, and re-designed 65 years later by Rees Jones, the course has staged the US Open three times  as well as one PGA Championship.

What a great week of golf ahead, I’m going for McIlroy in the Irish Open and Tiger at Congressional, what do you think?

Irish Open Back In Portrush After Sixty Five Years

The 2012 Irish Open takes a trip north of the border for this week’s event at one of the most famous courses in the world, Royal Portrush, which is situated eight miles north of Coleraine.

The well known golf course is located on the County Antrim coast, and last staged the tournament back in 1947, four years before it hosted The Open Championship.

In the 1990s it was also used to host the British Senior Open – on five occasions – and over the years has been a stopping off point for Americans players wishing to hone their links golf skills before continuing continuing on to compete in The Open.

And this week’s tournament also offers the players the opportunity to begin their preparations for The 2012 Open Championship which takes place at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in mid-July.

Noren Hopes To Defend Title In Wales

Alex Noren is hoping to re-create the form that he showed last year as he looks to defend his ISPS Handa Wales Open title tomorrow.

The 29 year old Swede romped to a fantastic victory at The Celtic Manor Resort 12 months ago after also coming through US Open Qualifying on the Monday.

Noren is three-time winner on the European Tour,  he took 14th spot in The Race to Dubai last season, and finished joint top of this year’s US Open qualifier at Walton Heath  to book his place in San Francisco.

“It was pretty much exactly the same how it happened last year,” said Noren. “I was so pleased to get into the US Open, so I took this week as I was on a high, and then winning here was fantastic and it just went on from there.

My Day Out At The BMW PGA Championship Practice Day

I went to watch the practice day of the BMW PGA Championship today at Wentworth, Virginia Water and what a lovely day to choose to go.

The sun was out for the first time in about 6 weeks and some of the top players in the world were in touching distance as it’s normally pretty quiet on practice days.

Watching these guys on the range and chipping green is a real treat and makes you appreciate how good these players really are.

If you are new to the game then going to watch tournament golf on a practice day is a great experience as you are generally allowed to walk a lot nearer  to the action than you would normally be allowed to, and you can learn a lot by listening to what the player’s and caddies are talking about and what they are thinking.

They’ve got course looking great this year and the new greens are looking much better this time around after a few complaints over the last couple of years. They’ve also dropped the 18th green by about 18 inches to make the long approach a little easier.

Tomorrow is the pro-am, so why don’t you get yourself down there and enjoy watching the golf without the big crowd!

Here are some of the pictures that I took today!

BMW PGA Championship – Strong Line-Up Announced

The world’s number one and number two golfers Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy will compete against a strong field at the forthcoming BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The line-up at the Surrey course boasts a host of major champions, including Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal and South African Ernie Els.

Donald beat Lee Westwood in a play-off to win in 2011, a victory which saw him lead the rankings for the first time.

The tournament starts on Thursday 24th May 2012 and runs across the weekend.

Rock and Manassero fight it out for Augusta spot

Matteo Manassero and Robert Rock go head-to-head Today with a place in the Masters Tournament up for grabs.

Robert Rock beat Tiger Woods two months ago and since winning in Abu Dhabi Rock has slipped from 55th to 57th in the world, but he has this one last chance to climb into the top 50 and earn a debut at Augusta National.

The 34 year old  Englishmen could make it by coming first or second in the Trophée Hassan II at the Royal Palace course in Agadir, although a runner-up finish might see him thwarted by others – Ernie Els included – competing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida.

For the young Italian, currently 61st, only a victory will do and his second place at the Open de Andalucía Costa del Sol last Sunday takes him into the event full of confidence and high hopes.

Rock was one off the lead at halfway last year at this very same course, but rather than grabbing his first victory dropped back to 19th finishing eight strokes behind fellow Englishman David Horsey.

Should be an exciting week of golf, make sure you’re watching!

Woods Believes McIlroy Could Follow In His Footsteps

Tiger Woods has added his voices to all of the praise which has been heaped on Rory McIlroy since his rise to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Woods became the youngest World Number One in history on June 15, 1997, with McIlroy becoming the second youngest aged 22 when he clinched the top spot last Sunday following his victory at the Honda Classic.

Woods spent a total of 623 weeks at the game’s summit before being knocked off by Lee Westwood; and whilst McIlroy’s reign could be ended as soon as Sunday night if either Luke Donald or Westwood were to prevail, Woods believes the Ulsterman has the potential to achieve as much as he did.

He said: “Rory has fantastic talent. He made a few makes on Sunday, but he recovered every time.  You’re not going to play perfectly all the time – some people don’t realize that. You’re going to make mistakes, which he did, and that’s fine. He recovered, and if you look at it, he missed on the correct side each time. He did all of the things that you need to do to get the job done.
