New Law Revealed About Long Putter

It has recently been announced the R&A and USGA have proposed rule changes to outlaw the use of anchoring long putters to the body.

The new law won’t take effect until January 1, 2016, to stay in line with the regular four-year cycle for any changes made to the Rules of Golf.

But the final decision is still yet to be made as lots of leading players have complained about the planned action, so the two governing bodies are taking further comments and suggestions throughout the golfing community before they come to a conclusion.

Under the proposal,  the long putters which are used by many top players will still be allowed in the bag but just can’t be anchored to the body.

I do understand why players are angry about the changes as some players have grown up using them and don’t know any better but I don’t agree that any club should be allowed to be anchored to a part of your body. Having the nerve to win a golf tournament shouldn’t be made easier by being able to keep the putter head still by touching your body.

I suspect we will be hearing a lot more about this over the coming weeks and it will be interesting to see how some players have reacted to the news.

The End Of a Great Year For McIlroy

Well the inevitable happened at the weekend and not even a record breaking round of 62 from Justin Rose (his lowest round on the European Tour by two) could prevent Rory McIlroy from capping his incredible season with victory at the DP World Tour Championship.

The Northern Irishman not only held the challenge from Justin Rose but also from World Number Two Luke Donald who he was paired with. It’s been an incredible year for McIlroy also winning the US Money List, the US PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

As seasons go it doesn’t get much better than that and it will be interesting to see how this effects him next year. Will he be as determined? Will the $120 million deal with Nike spur him on or will the new clubs leave him struggling? I’m looking forward to finding out, are you?

Golf Lesson Vouchers For Christmas

Christmas is coming and I bet you’re thinking about shopping and what presents to get your loved ones? Let’s face it most of the presents we bought for people last year are still in their wrappers on top of the wardrobe somewhere and will never get opened or used!

For this reason I normally buy my family presents that involve them actually getting out of the house and doing things like those ‘Red Letter Day Experiences’. This normally involves them doing something they wouldn’t normally do and a lot of the time leads them into starting a new hobby that they will do for the rest of their life.

That’s why golf is such a great game to learn, because n0 matter what age you or your friends or family are, you are able to pick up a golf club and play golf. YOU CAN START AT ANY AGE.  It’s not physically demanding,  I teach people up to the age of 75! Golf is a game that once you’ve started stays with you for the rest of your life, from playing it, to watching the great golf events on television.

So don’t deny your loved ones the chance of starting a game they may not have thought of trying. I can send gift vouchers any time up to the 22nd Dec if you want to give someone a golf lesson as a gift. You can spend as little as £23 for a 30 minute golf lesson or up to £120 for six half hour golf lessons which is an £18 saving!

If your are interested in purchasing a golf lesson voucher or would like more information then please contact me by email here or phone me on 07879 652367 and will be happy to answer any questions and get your voucher out to you straight away so your presents are sorted!

Rookie Beljan Defies Medical Advice To Get Maiden Win

Charlie Beljan held out for his first PGA Tour victory at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic – but it wasn’t as plain sailing as it sounds. It was only 2 days before that the rookie suffered a panic attack during his second round 64 and was taken to hospital.

He had been complaining of an elevated heart rate and shortness of breath, and told pgatour.com: “I thought I literally had a chance to die.”

But he went against medical advice by continuing in the tournament which was justified as he carried on to win by two shots finishing up on 16 under par.

Robert Garrigus and Matt Every came joint second on 14 under par after shooting rounds of 68.

Mickelson Slump Has Spurred Him On For The Future

One of the nicest guys on tour Phil Mickelson has admitted that this season has seen some of the worst golf he has ever played in his long and illustrious career but  has said it’s proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Mickelson who has won four majors and countless tournaments started the season in fine form winning at Pebble Beach in February which we all thought would set him up for a great season. But come summer his form deserted him and a below average performance at the US open was followed by missed cuts in the Greenbrier and at the Open Championship which is one of his favourite events.

The big smiling yank acknowledged his loss of form and decided to go back to the drawing board and he feels he is reaping the benefits of working on every part of his game.

A decent performance in the Ryder Cup and coming so close last week has proven that all the hard work is paying off. Good on ya Phil, you’re a great golfer and a really nice bloke too! You deserve every success.

Winter – Keep Your Clubs Out Of The Garage

It’s that time of year again where a lot of golfers put their golf clubs away in the garage and forget about them until spring next year. But for me personally this is the time of year that the clubs are kept at my golf club or in the boot of my car.

Winter is the perfect time to really hone and perfect your game. You have the chance to really work on specific areas of your game which you thought weren’t quite up to scratch in the summer. One thing that I try and work on in the winter is distance control, making sure I know exactly how far each club is going especially with my wedges. From 100 yards and in is the scoring part of the game of golf, if you can get the ball close to flag from 10- 100 yards, you will always have a chance of either a birdie or par putt to keep the momentum of your round going.

I will be giving some tips towards the end of the week on the best way to practice your wedge shots. Happy practising!

Fatigued Woods Takes Extended Break

Former world No.1 Tiger Woods  has said that he is looking forward to a break from golf and blamed fatigue as the reason for not competing in this week’s $7 million WGC-HSBC tournament at Mission Hills in China.

After a recent busy schedule which has included an exhibition match against Rory McIlroy, Woods decided he needed a break. By his own standards he hasn’t had the best year in golfing terms. He has won tournaments and has always been in contention but the putter has gone a bit cold on him. At times he has looked lost and strained and at times he looks like he’s thriving on the golf course. I for one think a break will do him good.

He will be playing in his own tournament before putting the clubs away until next year. I honestly believe Tiger will be back to No.1 in the world next year. Don’t hold me to that though!

Poulter and Rose Looking To Win Another WGC Title

Justin Rose and Ian Poulter are looking to turn their very impressive team record into individual success this week at Mission Hills in the WGC  – HSBC Champions.

The pair have represented England twice in the World Cup at Mission Hills finishing fourth and second in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

But this week they will both be competing  individually for the their second World Golf Championship and there was some strange questions at the press conference. Rose asked Poulter how he could beat them this week as he was in such good form, to which Poulter said that Justin was ”better off the tee and hit more greens than him but just needed to improve with the putter”

Not bad advice from one of the best putters in the world and maybe as they are best friends Poulter should give him some advice on the greens?

Once the banter was out of the way, Poulter said that his experience of Mission Hills and the fact he has partnered Ross Fisher here twice – could be a big advantage for him.

Rose could take a big step to chasing down McIlroy this week….. should be another weekend of exciting golf ahead.

McIlroy Sees Off Tiger In Head-To-Head

Today was the eagerly anticipated showdown between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods at Jinsha Lake Golf Club in China. It was over 18 holes and was tight all the way with McIlroy eventually winning by a shot over world No.2 Woods.  McIlroy shot a 67 and got off to a fast start with two birdies in the first three holes. Woods carded six birdies and two bogeys in his round of 68 and couldn’t overcome the great start from the Northern Irishmen.

Both players had to make long journeys after they were competing in the business end of different tournaments across Asia, McIlroy finishing second and Woods finishing fourth respectively but that didn’t stop them producing great golf at times. Tiger was fresh off a 63 at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia and is showing signs of being back to his best, he just needs to get that putter working and I can see him overtaking Rory next season.
