McIlroy ‘Should He Stay Or Should He Go?’

Yesterday Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy revealed  that he might not compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro to stay clear of any controversy which might occur over which country the 23 year old should represent.

The world No 1 who is from the beautiful County Down in Northern Ireland, could play for either the Republic of Ireland or Great Britain in Brazil when golf is due to be a part of the Games again for the first time since 1904.

“If I could and there was a Northern Irish team I’d play for Northern Ireland. Said McIlroy

When it was announced that golf was returning to the Olympics  back in 2009 McIlroy announced he would “probably play for Great Britain” which he also repeated last year, but he has now had second thoughts.

To be honest, does it really matter who he plays for? As long as golf is back in the Olympics for everyone to see and McIlroy gets to show his talent to a much wider audience it can only be good for the game.

Happy New Year – Here’s to a great year of golf!

Good morning and a Happy New Year!

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and New Year celebrations and are looking forward to 2013. I’m sure you’re all itching to get out onto the golf course after the poor weather that we’ve had recently, I know I am!

I will continue writing posts this year keeping you all up-to-date on the latest news in the world of golf and giving my views on tournaments and major championships.

Last year saw some amazing scenes and I’m sure this year will be no different. For whatever reason the quality of golf that we see seems to get better and better every year and I don’t see why this year should be any different.

Here’s to a great year of golf and getting those handicaps down!

A Great Year Of Golf

Well it’s been a gripping season and we’ve seen some amazing moments. The majors have been fantastic, at The Masters we saw Bubba Watson play a miraculous shot from the trees in a play-off against Louis Oosthuizen to win his first major title. Webb Simpson held off Graeme McDowell to win the US Open. The Big Easy clinched victory at Royal Lytham after Adam Scott crumbled under pressure and of course the young unstoppable Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy won the The US PGA by an amazing eight shots!

The Ryder Cup was the highlight of the year for me, it was just an incredible performance in hostile conditions in Chicago. The team all pulled together and produced the greatest comeback in sporting history after an amazing performance from Ian Poulter in the fourballs on the Saturday evening.

Also we’ve had the whole debacle over the long putter which looks like it is going to be outlawed in 2016 and is going to change the game massively in my opinion seeing that a lot of top players in the world use them. Will they carry on using it up until 2016? Or will they try and make the change early to prepare for the change? I’m sure it will all become clear next year!

Senden Leads By Two Over Rose In Australia

The Australian Open got under way today and it was the home favourite John Senden who is flying high at the top of the leaderboard after he shot a superb opening 66 to finish two shots clear of the chasing pack.

Senden from Queensland was out early and made the most of easy conditions and the six under target proved to be unassailable as nobody could catch him in the afternoon.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Senden though, he started with a birdie but then  had back-to-back bogeys at the second and third holes, but he recovered in fine style carding seven birdies in eleven holes from the 7th to the 17th which left him sitting on top of the pack.

Justin Rose is flying the British flag shooting a 68 finishing two back of Senden. He is level with Gareth Paddison, Richard Green, Kim Felton and Australian Brendan Jones.

Come on Justin finish the season in style!

Kaymer All Smiles In The Sun

Martin Kaymer’s year ended a lot better than it began this year and it’s  a welcome relief for the young German who survived a late wobble to hold on for his first victory this year by claiming the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City.

After recently holing what turned out to be the winning put in the Ryder Cup in September and now winning in South Africa, Martin Kaymer is certainly back where he belongs and it won’t be long until he’s back in the top 5 in the world.

Kaymer was overnight leader and looked to be comfortable until bogeying the 15th when he saw his lead cut down to one shot from Charl Schwartzel, but ice cool Kaymer managed to hang on and win by two shots.

The winning total was eight under par.

1. Kaymer -8

2. Schwartzel -6

3. Haas -3

Another great week for European golf with Graeme McDowell winning Tiger Woods’ tournament in California as well by beating chasing American Keegan Bradley.

We won’t be seeing Tiger Woods play for six weeks as he is taking a break from the game and preparing himself for 2013 in which he hopes he can get back on the major trail again!

New Law Revealed About Long Putter

It has recently been announced the R&A and USGA have proposed rule changes to outlaw the use of anchoring long putters to the body.

The new law won’t take effect until January 1, 2016, to stay in line with the regular four-year cycle for any changes made to the Rules of Golf.

But the final decision is still yet to be made as lots of leading players have complained about the planned action, so the two governing bodies are taking further comments and suggestions throughout the golfing community before they come to a conclusion.

Under the proposal,  the long putters which are used by many top players will still be allowed in the bag but just can’t be anchored to the body.

I do understand why players are angry about the changes as some players have grown up using them and don’t know any better but I don’t agree that any club should be allowed to be anchored to a part of your body. Having the nerve to win a golf tournament shouldn’t be made easier by being able to keep the putter head still by touching your body.

I suspect we will be hearing a lot more about this over the coming weeks and it will be interesting to see how some players have reacted to the news.

The End Of a Great Year For McIlroy

Well the inevitable happened at the weekend and not even a record breaking round of 62 from Justin Rose (his lowest round on the European Tour by two) could prevent Rory McIlroy from capping his incredible season with victory at the DP World Tour Championship.

The Northern Irishman not only held the challenge from Justin Rose but also from World Number Two Luke Donald who he was paired with. It’s been an incredible year for McIlroy also winning the US Money List, the US PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

As seasons go it doesn’t get much better than that and it will be interesting to see how this effects him next year. Will he be as determined? Will the $120 million deal with Nike spur him on or will the new clubs leave him struggling? I’m looking forward to finding out, are you?

Donald Leads McIlroy By One In Dubai

It was former number one Luke Donald who was back to his best today shooting a superb 65 to take the lead of the DP World Tour Championship, but he’s got the company of current number one Rory McIlroy sitting just one shot back following a fantastic 66.

Donald set the early place and showed that last weeks win at the Dunlop Pheonix in Japan was a sign that he is back to his best and competing with the likes of McIlroy again.

McIlroy didn’t have the best of starts but came to life on the back nine, with five birdies in seven holes putting him right back into contention where he loves to be.

The Northern Irishmen finished the day on six under par alongside Scotland’s Marc Warren  and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain.

All of the big names are  near the top of the leaderboard waiting to pounce tomorrow and hopefully set up a terrific weekend for us to sit back and enjoy.
