Although the Ryder Cup is well over a year away, it’s in the thoughts of many people already and will continue to be for the next 12 months as the European players battle it out in the Ryder Cup Standings.

Stephen Gallacher is one of the players keen to make the team this time round and admits he would relish the chance of playing the prestigious event in his home country Scotland.

Gallacher’s family have a history in the Ryder Cup as his uncle Bernard has captained the side three times but unfortunately only winning once. That victory came at Oak Hill in America which saw the memorable scenes of Seve and Nick Faldo hugging and crying on the 18th green after Phillip Walton saw off Jay Hass in the penultimate group.

Gallacher is going to have to play extremely well if he is to make the team at Gleneagles as there are some players who will equally want to play their part. I think at best he will have to rely on a captains pick from Paul McGinley.

Tiger and Sergio Row Needs To Move On

Last week at Wentworth saw a lot of controversy when Sergio Garcia said some comments about Tiger Woods that were taken the wrong way ahead of the BMW PGA Championship.

When Garcia was asked if he would invite Tiger around for dinner he replied “He can come around every night for some fried chicken if he wants”

Although Garcia hasn’t apologised to Woods face-to -face yet Tiger is keen to move on now even though he is still upset about what was said.

Garcia obviously isn’t a racist, but when you’re under the spotlight you have to be careful about what you say as the press are very quick to jump on any error you make. He just said the first thing that came into his head. If he had said’ Hot dog and chips’ then the press would have still found a way to make it into a story.

For the good of the game this needs to be resolved so we can all MOVE ON!!!

Zone Golf Charity Shoot Out A Success

The eagerly awaited Zone Golf Charity Shoot Out at Dukes Meadows Golf  in West London yesterday lived up to its expectations as crowds flocked in to see some of the best golfers in the world compete for a £250,000 prize.

Justin Rose, Paul Lawrie,  Ian Poulter and Paul McGinley joined by four celebrities/sportsman competed in a new style of golf called ‘Zone Golf’.

This is a new format of golf which sees players pick a zone of the green to try and hit and are then rewarded with points if they hit the ZONE they elected from the tee. There are three ZONES – Red=9pts Amber=6pts Green=3pts plus another 1 point for a bogey, 2 for par and 3 for a birdie.

There were two semi-final matches to start with, then a final and then a third and fourth play-off.

It was a tight finish in the final match which went down to a putting competition on the last hole between Ian Poulter and Paul McGinley. Poulter had to hole a long 25 foot putt which he failed to make, which allowed McGinley an easy two-putt to win him and Jamie Redknapp the money.

The winning team received a total of £100,000 to give to a charity of their choice and the three other teams  received a total of £50,000 each.

A great day was had by all and I’m looking forward to next year already!

Decision Finally Made On The Anchoring Of Putters

Today the R&A and USGA have finally announced that anchored putters will be banned as of 2016. 

It has been an ongoing debate which nearly saw a split between the European Tour and PGA Tour, but hopefully this should be the end of all that debacle now.

This rule is going to effect a lot of players on both tours, especially the ones that have grown up using the long putters from day one, but they will have to adapt. The rule should have come into effect along time ago in my opinion, but at least they have finally seen the light and come to right decision and everyone can now move on and get on with playing golf rather than talking about the rules of golf.

Golf is about nerve and playing well under pressure and come 2016 I think we will see a lot of players that are in the top 20 in the world drop down the rankings quite quickly.

The Players Championship Most Memorable Moment

The Players Championship is under way, and  American Scott Stallings  is five under par through only five holes! What an incredible start to the championship.

This event seems to bring the best out of players and we’ve had some great champions in the past who have given us some great moments including Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Nick Price, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia, but the most memorable moment for me has to be when Tiger Woods holed that monster putt on the tough 17th hole back in 2001 and then went on to win the title. It really was a moment that I’ll never forget.

If you can’t remember that putt, here it is:

I wonder who the champion will be come Sunday? Will there be a defining moment that gives someone the edge going into the final few holes? The one thing for sure is that the winner here is a deserved winner and will have had to play some great golf to lift that trophy.

Woods and Snedeker Looking To Put The Masters Behind Them

The Players Championship gets underway tomorrow at the world famous Sawgrass golf course in Florida. The players see this tournament as their fifth major as it has one of the best fields in golf and the prize money isn’t too bad either!

It’s a course that World No.1 Tiger Woods has struggled a bit in the past but he has managed a win here before and will be looking to keep his good run of form going and get that dreaded 15th hole at the Masters out of his system.

Brandt Snedeker who had a poor finish in the last round at Augusta last month will  hope his fantastic start to the year will continue and he can get over the disappointment of missing out on the green jacket after three superb rounds at the Masters, which saw a bad fourth day of putting let him down.

This is a bit of a horses for courses type of course and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a past winner or an older player claims the tile this time around.

Should Monty Be In The World Golf Hall Of Fame?

There is a lot of debate at the moment regarding whether Colin Montgomerie should be inducted into the World Golf Hall Of Fame and the decision has been heavily criticised by Tony Jacklin and Ray Floyd who take the stance that a player should have won at least two majors to be considered.

Montgomerie known as probably the best player never to win a major has had an illustrious  career winning eight European Tour order of merits  which includes seven in a row, and has one of the best Ryder Cup records in history. 

Does this mean that if Ben Curtis wins another major in his career that he will be seen as achieved more in golf than Montgomerie? I don’t think so. I agree that to be seen as a truly great player in world golf you have to have won major champions, but if the list includes players such as Sandy Lyle and Vijay Singh (who I know have won majors ) then it has to include a player like Monty in  my opinion.

He has achieved a lot more than some players on that list even without a major to his name and was the most consistent golfer on tour for around 10 years.

Former Open champion Darren Clarke returns to action this week after missing nearly six weeks with a hamstring injury caused by playing tennis.

The injury forced him to miss the first major of the year at Augusta, but the Northern Irishman is back to full fitness and will be playing golf in this week’s Indonesian Masters in Jakarta. 

It’s been tough for Clarke sitting around doing nothing for the past few weeks, and very frustrating watching his fellow professionals battling it out at the Masters on television, but after a full recovery he can’t wait to be out on the fairways once again.

Oosthuizen One Shot Back In Disrupted First Day In South Korea

The first day of the Ballentine’s Championship was disrupted due to poor visibility and rain early on which caused two hours of play to be lost in South Korea.

Louis Oosthuizen finds himself one shot off the lead which is currently held by five players who are on five under par, but the South African can still catch them as he has only played 16 holes of which he birdied the first four.

He wasn’t able to keep the good form going as the wind got up in the afternoon but will still fancy his chances at joining the leaders first thing tomorrow and confident he can lead the event after two rounds and hopefully going into Sunday.

Tiger Sniffing After Golden Bear In The Woods

Tiger Woods is going into the Masters at Augusta a red-hot favourite according to eight-time European Tour Champion Colin Montgomerie. The big Scot believes that if Tiger can putt the way he has done in the past month then he will be virtually unbeatable.

Although the current World Number One has had his problems with injuries in recent years, this year has seen him win three times already and if he can win here in Augusta then I believe that Jack Nicklaus’ record is definitely in danger of being beaten by Tiger. It’s hard not to see him winning at least two majors this year which will take him to 16 majors with still a long way to go in his career.

Two days to go!
